Re-Scan Procedure In New Remote Location
Added by Mike Whalon over 1 year ago
Configuration :
RPi 3B (v1.2)
OS: OSMC (KODI 20.1)
Tuner: Hauppauge WinTV-dualHD USB
Tvheadend 4.2.8
Tvheadend HTSP Client 20.6.2
Installation/configuration smooth. During home configuration, Tvheadend found 68 muxes and successfully mapped to 42 channels.
my objective is to use RPi/kodi/tvheadend to watch OTA television at remote (i.e., no internet) camp.
During home configuration, Tvheadend found 68 muxes and successfully mapped to 42 channels. When I move the setup to my remote location, I'll need to re-scan/re-map muxes/channels for the new location. A cursory review of the forum did not reveal a procedure. I envision a couple of protocols. 1) delete the current table of muxes and force re-scan, or 2) uninstall Tvheadend, delete '/home/osmc/.hts', reinstall Tvheadend, and reenter all configuration using the wizard. The first option would seem to be the least 'painful'. How do I assure that the mux table is purged prior to re-scan. Would I need to delete other infomation (e.g., EPG Table) as well? Or, is there a better alternative option?
Thanks,

- Selected 'Confuguration'>'DVB Inputs'>'Muxes' tabs,
- Deleted the existing mux table,
- Selected 'Configuration'>'DVB Inputs'>'Networks' tabs,
- Highlighted my 'ATSC-T' Network,
- Edited 'Pre-defined muxes:' to be 'United States: us-ATSC-center-frequencies 8VSB'
- Edited 'Network Discovery:' to be 'New muxes only', and
- Selected 'Forced Scan'.
Execution of 'Forced Scan' does not trigger any apparent activity. However, a new mux table is generated - almost immediately. Muxes seem to have no signal or 'failed'. In any event, no muxes are available for mapping. I was planning on examining the mux table more closly on my return home, but RPi will no longer boot up. I'm sure that I am missing something simple, but have not yet stumbled onto it. Any advice/suggestions appreciated.
Thanks,

"RPi will no longer boot up"
That's a much more fundamental problem than TVH not scanning muxes successfully. You need to resolve it first obviously. Depending which OS you have installed, you need to start with their forum or mailing list.
Post full details of the configuration and what commands you have issued and their output there.

Thanks Dave H,
I have resolved the RPi not booting issue.
Objective: Utilize RPi/OSMC/Tvheadend to view OTA television at my remote (no internet) camping location. Currently my trailer is equipped with a couple of older CRT style televisions. OTA broadcasts are currently received using a digital-analog converter box. This configuration receives about 20 channels effortlessly. I assume the RPi/OSMC/Tvheadend configuration should be able to at least match that performance.
I believe I have Tvheadend properly configured. At home (near Kansas City), Tvheadend successfully scans muxes and maps channels. I am able to watch several local channels. However, using the same configuration, attempts to scan muxes and map channels at my remote location (near Dadeville, Missouri) fails.
Attached, please find pics of various Tvheadend configuration pages, and a description of entered commands. I have noted that this version of Tvheadend does NOT save configuration pages. I constantly have to re-enter (and Apply) information.
Thanks,

You mention you’re not connected to the internet in the camping location. Are you connected back home. You may want to check the Allowed Networks section in the TVH config https://tvheadend.org/boards/14/topics/29760
RE: Re-Scan Procedure In New Remote Location - Added by Mike Whalon over 1 year ago
Thanks for the reply Jonas.
There is no internet access at the camping location. OSMC provides a 'Hot Spot' that I use to access Tvheadend. In the Tvheadend configuration I have specified Allowed networks: '0.0.0.0/0'. Instructions seem to imply that this entry allows access from all networks. Are you suggesting that I instead list my specific networks?

I’m suggesting in the absence of anything obvious you check that option out a little further. A Google search will throw up similar issues. It’s the one obvious difference in your current setup. Hotspot IP addresses can play havoc on network dependent servers.

Have you checked what signal strength you're getting at the campsite? I'm not sure of the best means to do that; it may involve additional programs. But there may be some info in Status/Stream. It may be best to compare the values at the campsite against those you see at home (i.e. relative rather than absolute values may be more reliable)

That information is indeed available in the Status tab on the web ui. It can be fairly arbitrary though. Best to check Status at both location to achieve some form of metric but I strongly doubt that’s the root of the problem. Hotspots are notoriously problematic in TVH

Current configuration:
RPi 3B (v 1.2),
OS: OSMC (KODI 20.1),
Hauppauge WinTV-dualHD dual USB tuner
TVHeadend 4.2.8.
Objective:
Video/movie (stored on separate drive) and OTA TV viewing at ‘remote’ location.
Question:
How can I get this working?
Status:
All hardware/software appears to be installed, configured, and operating fine. While logged into my home network (192.168.xx.xxx), Tvheadend scan detects ‘local’ OTA broadcasts, and these are viewable.
My ‘remote’ camper is equipped with a fixed antenna. I am currently able to receive OTA TV broadcasts using either a digital TV or an A/D converter. I assume my RPi/OSMC/Tvheadend should perform at least as good as either of these. That is, I assume signal strength is adequate.
Issue:
Attempts to scan/view OTA TV at my ‘remote’ location using my RPi/OSMC/Tvheadend equipment have been unsuccessful. In order to use my RPi/OSMC/Tvheadend equipment I need to have Tvheadend scan for OTA broadcasts at my ‘remote’ location. This requires connecting to Tvheadend using a separate device. There is no available network at my ‘remote’ location.
Observations:
• OSMC ‘Hot Spot’
In lieu of a Network, OSMC can generate a ‘Hot Spot’. With OSMC ‘Hot Spot’ active, I logged on the ‘Hot Spot’ with my laptop, and was able to connect to the Tvheadend port. However, with this arrangement, Tvheadend does not ‘save’ configuration parameters, and does not initiate a ‘Forced Scan’. Subsequent discussion (on the Tvheadend forum) indicates that Tvheadend does not ‘play well’ with ‘Hot Spot’.
Connecting to the Tvheadend (9981) port using the OSMC Hot Spot is not a viable solution.
• Public Network
Attempted to utilize a public network in a nearby (to my ‘remote’ location) town library. Successfully logged both the RPi and laptop onto the Library network (RPi Assigned IP: 10.220.1.137). However I was unable to connect to the Tvheadend (9981) port. Connection continued to ‘time-out’. Still at the library, I re-engaged the OSMC ‘Hot Spot’. I was able to connect to the Tvheadend (9981) port, but (again) was unable to initiate ‘Forced Scan’.
Connecting to the Tvheadend (9981) port using a Public Network appears to also not be a viable solution. I suppose it is possible that there is something unique about a Public Network that might not allow this connection. Any insight would be appreciated.
RE: [SOLVED] Re-Scan Procedure In New Remote Location - Added by Mike Whalon over 1 year ago
I've marked this issue as [SOLVED], only because I seem to have no more options/suggestions. At this stage I assume Tvheadend cannot obtain a working scan without a 'formal' network connection. I'll continue to periodically check-in to see if anyone has further insight and/or success remotely scanning for OTA broadcasts. Thanks for the comments.

I don’t think you fully checked out my suggestion above or maybe didn’t understand it. As a test take your setup to a friends place who has a similar ISP as yourself without making any changes to your network configuration. Run a scan there and see what results it yields. Maybe you could do the same with a fixed ISP in your remote location where those channels you are looking for exist. Can you tether a WiFi AP connection from your mobile phone and test that way.
I’d also suggest if you have not done so try LibreELEC instead. Support is very comprehensive. I’m still convinced it’s down to Network configuration but as I don’t have that RPI setup here I can’t test it.
RE: Re-Scan Procedure In New Remote Location - Added by Mike Whalon over 1 year ago
Thanks Jonas. I can check a similar network just South of town. Should confirm that a static (home) network works. Can also try a WiFi AP with mobile phone on next visit to remote location.
I do have a fresh install of LibreELEC. I'll add Tvheadend & give it a shot as well.
RE: Re-Scan Procedure In New Remote Location - Added by Jonas Lang over 1 year ago
LibreELEC is simply a matter of installing TVH as an add on service, configuring it from the web UI and installing the LibreELEC PVR client. Simple really.
RE: Re-Scan Procedure In New Remote Location - Added by Mike Whalon over 1 year ago
Thanks for sticking with me on this.
In my home location, using a fresh install of LibreELEC/Tvheadend I was able to activate a Hot Spot on my iPhone and successfully connect both RPi and Laptop. Tvheadend successfully conducted 'Forced Scan', and correctly mapped about 30 broadcasts. This is not the first time connectivity and Forced Scan have worked perfectly at my home location, so I'll not get my hopes up. Maybe a couple of weeks before I go 'remote' again. I'll keep you posted.
RE: [SOLVED] Re-Scan Procedure In New Remote Location - Added by Mike Whalon about 1 year ago
OK, I was able to successfully scan Tvheadend at my remote location this past weekend.
Current configuration:
RPi 3B (v 1.2),
OS: OSMC (KODI 20.1),
Hauppauge WinTV-dualHD dual USB tuner
TVHeadend 4.2.8.
Enabled 'Hot Spot' on my iPhone, and accessed Tvheadend using a laptop. There were some 'false starts', but ultimately I was able to successfully execute 'Forced Scan' at my remote location. Successfully mapped (the expected number) 17 channels, and all are viewable. The primary change that I made was using the iPhone as the 'Hot Spot'.
I'll likely stick with this configuration now that I have it working. But, plan to attempt something similar using (my original) OSMC, just to confirm that it works as well.
Thanks Jonas for sticking with me on this little adventure. In the end, it was worth it.

I had an idea going that route would work.
