Disturbed recordings
Added by Martijn de Munnik over 12 years ago
Hi,
I keep struggling to get good recordings with tvheadend. I use DVB-T in the Netherlands (Digitenne) on my ship. I replaced the old antenna with a new one, a Glomex Panorama. For now I only have one PCI DVB-T adapter in my computer which is identified by tvheadend as a "Philips TDA10046H DVB-T". When I start to record I got a lot of these errors in de logging console of tvheadend:
Mar 26 21:17:27 TS: Philips TDA10046H DVB-T/Digitenne: 786,000 kHz/SBS 6: MPEG2AUDIO @ #1042: Continuity counter error Mar 26 21:17:27 cwc: Got unexpected ECM reply (seqno: 3960) Mar 26 21:17:27 TS: Philips TDA10046H DVB-T/Digitenne: 786,000 kHz/SBS 6: TELETEXT @ #1043: Continuity counter error Mar 26 21:17:35 TS: Philips TDA10046H DVB-T/Digitenne: 786,000 kHz/SBS 6: Transport error indicator, 11 duplicate log lines suppressed Mar 26 21:17:35 TS: Philips TDA10046H DVB-T/Digitenne: 786,000 kHz/SBS 6: MPEG2VIDEO @ #1041: Continuity counter error, 4 duplicate log lines suppressed Mar 26 21:17:35 TS: Philips TDA10046H DVB-T/Digitenne: 786,000 kHz/SBS 6: MPEG2AUDIO @ #1042: Continuity counter error, 1 duplicate log lines suppressed Mar 26 21:17:46 TS: Philips TDA10046H DVB-T/Digitenne: 786,000 kHz/SBS 6: Transport error indicator Mar 26 21:17:46 TS: Philips TDA10046H DVB-T/Digitenne: 786,000 kHz/SBS 6: MPEG2VIDEO @ #1041: Continuity counter error Mar 26 21:17:46 TS: Philips TDA10046H DVB-T/Digitenne: 786,000 kHz/SBS 6: MPEG2AUDIO @ #1042: Continuity counter error Mar 26 21:17:46 TS: Philips TDA10046H DVB-T/Digitenne: 786,000 kHz/SBS 6: TELETEXT @ #1043: Continuity counter error Mar 26 21:17:54 TS: Philips TDA10046H DVB-T/Digitenne: 786,000 kHz/SBS 6: Transport error indicator, 6 duplicate log lines suppressed Mar 26 21:17:54 TS: Philips TDA10046H DVB-T/Digitenne: 786,000 kHz/SBS 6: MPEG2VIDEO @ #1041: Continuity counter error, 2 duplicate log lines suppressed Mar 26 21:17:54 TS: Philips TDA10046H DVB-T/Digitenne: 786,000 kHz/SBS 6: TELETEXT @ #1043: Continuity counter error, 1 duplicate log lines suppressed Mar 26 21:17:54 TS: Philips TDA10046H DVB-T/Digitenne: 786,000 kHz/SBS 6: MPEG2AUDIO @ #1042: Continuity counter error, 1 duplicate log lines suppressed Mar 26 21:17:55 TS: Philips TDA10046H DVB-T/Digitenne: 786,000 kHz/SBS 6: Transport error indicator, 17 duplicate log lines suppressed Mar 26 21:17:55 TS: Philips TDA10046H DVB-T/Digitenne: 786,000 kHz/SBS 6: CA @ #1049: Continuity counter error Mar 26 21:17:55 TS: Philips TDA10046H DVB-T/Digitenne: 786,000 kHz/SBS 6: MPEG2VIDEO @ #1041: Continuity counter error, 4 duplicate log lines suppressed@
When I watch the recording the sound is gone every now and then for a short time. And the image is sometimes disturbed. I also used femon -H to monitor the signal quality when recording. I guess the first line is when the recording starts and tvheadend changes the frequency on the adapter. The other lines are made during the first few seconds of the recording. I already similar lines as above in the tvheadend logging console.

As far as I understand the femon output is good, there are no uncorrectable errors and the signal has a reasonable strength. The system shouldn't be a issue. The recordings are written to the samsung disk which is formatted with brtfs. I want to replace the philips card with two TerraTec PCIe cards (both dual tuner), because the system has only 1 PCI slot. I also tried to records with an Haupage card and an external USB stick but they have the same problems. Any ideas how to fix this issue?

I am having the same problem with CLEAR QAM on digital cable. My symptoms are the same as the ones you describe. I posted my problem a few days ago. I am hoping someone can help us. Thanks,

I get the same output for my card. I don't know if it is related to the problem or not. Can anyone on the forum please let us know? Thanks.

I've upgraded to a new kernel (Linux stuurhut 3.2.0-0.bpo.2-rt-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT RT Sun Mar 25 11:26:40 UTC 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux) and now the problem seems to be gone. I was running the stock debian squeeze kernel when I had these issues.
RE: Disturbed recordings - Added by signal quest over 12 years ago
I just tried 3.2 and it broke my nvidia driver. I also tried 3.0 with no change. The problem still exists.
RE: Disturbed recordings - Added by Martijn de Munnik over 12 years ago
I think I was a little bit to soon with my conclusion. When I changed to the new kernel a recording a made was almost flawless but now new recordings have the same issue. I replaced everything since I first started to try, antenna, cables, amplifier, entire computer. Only the DVB-T cards are the same but I have 3 different cards (two PCI and one USB). I'm going to change them to two PCIe cards and see if that solves something.

Hi.
That's well known buffer problem.
You have to add to /etc/sysctl.conf this:
net.core.rmem_max = 16777216
net.core.wmem_max = 16777216

Can you explain why tuning network parameters help with this problem with dvb devices?

RE: Disturbed recordings - Added by signal quest over 12 years ago
Please explain this to me as well. As the recording problem is not a network streaming problem as far as I can tell.
RE: Disturbed recordings - Added by Igosr Petroff over 12 years ago
Hi.
I can't explain that problem in short (a lot of info) but increase network buffer really helps.
Try yourself to do that, and check.
Actually this problem described in getstream satellite forums but is useful for DVB-T too. ( of course russian, but you can use google translate. )

Especially this strings
"

indicate that problem. I had similar occurence too, but after tweakinng network buffer all errors gone.
I think for DVB cards need bigger buffer.
Regards.
RE: Disturbed recordings - Added by Martijn de Munnik over 12 years ago
Hi Igosr,
I tried your suggestion, but that doesn't seem to help. I also don't understand what the network buffer size has to do with the recording using dvb-t?
thanks,
Martijn
RE: Disturbed recordings - Added by signal quest over 12 years ago
I solved my problem relating to this by replacing my Avermedia A180 with a DVICO HDTV3 GOLD-T TUNER CARD. Now my live TV and recordings are flawless.
