Bug #1237
[PATCHES] Update of outdated DVB-S scan files
0%
Description
TVheadend syncs its scan files out of the dvb-apps which is somewhat outdated for most of frequencies. Below I provide several patches that fix this for the Astra 19E, Hotbird 13E and Thor 1W for both dvb-apps and tvheadend sources. I believe that I prepared them in the appropriate way, but obviously please take a look whether I am correct and if so add them to the source. If possible please send them to the linux-dvb mailing list as for me every time I want to send there something I get a ban...

- Status changed from New to Rejected
Please submit to linuxtv.org we don't maintain our own scan files as you point out we simply grab the latest state of dvb-apps at build time.
We have considered finding an alternative source, but dvb-apps is still the most commonly used.
If you have specific local requirements you need to mod, then you're obviously free to mod you're own config files and point TVH at them accordingly (Configuration tab).

I understand rejection and I have already submitted several patches to the linuxtv.org mailing list - [email protected]. In the mean time I think You guys should consider making possible to choose at configure between fetching those files from web and using the list already available at /usr/share/dvb/ as the part of linuxtv-dvb-apps and just linking to it. After all it is 3,5 Mb of almost the same data

If you're building your own debs and don't want the pre-bundled files then run ./configure --disable-dvbscan and it will default to using /usr/share/dvb.
Else go to Configuration tab and enter /usr/share/dvb (or any other location which contains folders dvb-[sct] etc...) in the scan files config box.

P.S.
The reason for including the pre-bundled files in our default packages is that we want a consistent (default) user experience regardless of platform. Some distro's do use patched dvb-apps files but many do not, so we bundle the latest official state and provide a means to change the preferred location.

"./configure --disable-dvbscan and it will default to using /usr/share/dvb."
Thanks for fast response! I didn't know about that switch and that is what it does. I was afraid that it would disable more than that
and yes I agree that those files provided by distro's vary a lot and are somewhat outdated. The one in media-tv/linuxtv-dvb-apps from official Gentoo repository is from Frebruary 2012...

Yeah its not a well documented command and I only added it recently when we switched to parsing the scan files at run time rather than build time.
Generally we'd expect most people to just build it as is and include the scan files (as this is how our deb's will be provided) but switch the config if required.
Let me know how you get on.

I have up to date /usr/share/dvb directory so in my case it would be redundant to have both therefore I'll make use of this disable option n a bit and would let You know how it turned out

I build tvhedend with --disable-dvbscan. All seems working fine as searching for new dvb-s network to scan found those files located in /usr/share/dvb. Now moving to updating more of those dvb-apps files and sending them to the linuxtv.org

well Adam perhaps You know someone working with dvb-apps to whom I may write because today I got response from [email protected] that patches I have send to the [email protected] are "Not Applicable" because they "patches aren't meant to be applicable via the media-tree.git".
I do not know why they said that but it does not look as if they would update them for dvb-apps just like I said they should be...

Unfortunately I don't, I've never had much interaction with linuxtv. I've only been on this project for a few months. But I can't think why you would get a response about media-tree.git its a completely different part of the project.
The only thing I can suggest at this stage is to try posting to their mailing list and see if you can get a response.
But I know people seem to be having all sorts of problems dealing with linuxtv when it comes to submitting scan file patches. It's why we've considered looking for an alternative source of data, but thus far having really had time to look into it properly.
