pctv nanostick through WMWare
Added by Per Åkesson over 11 years ago
Dear all,
I am trying to run tvheadend on a guest Ubuntu 12.04 OS in
a virtual WMWare Player machine.
I have connected a PCTV nanostick t2 290e to my
host, Windows Home Server 2011, and enabled it to
pass-through to Ubunto.
In Ubuntu I do lsusb:
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 2013:024f Unknown (Pinnacle?)
which seems correct according to: http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/DVB-T2_USB_Devices
But in the tvheadend web admin gui I don't have any
devices in Configuration->TV Adapters dropdown.
Anyone know what is the problem?
Can I run tvheadend with this configuration?
thanks in advance

I don't know about the config, but have you got the firmware installed? What's in /dev/dvb, what's showing in dmesg as the stick initialises?
Tvheadend works fine with this stick in a normal config.

Thanks for taking interest into my problem.
I don't have any specific firmware installed.
This is output from /dev/dvb:
per@ubuntu:~$ ls /dev/dvb
adapter0
per@ubuntu:~$
These are the relevant lines from dmesg output:
[ 2.178855] pcnet32: eth0: registered as PCnet/PCI II 79C970A
[ 2.180119] pcnet32: 1 cards_found
[ 2.194458] usb 1-1: New USB device found, idVendor=2013, idProduct=024f
[ 2.194464] usb 1-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
[ 2.194467] usb 1-1: Product: PCTV 290e

[ 2.385212] scsi2 : ioc0: LSI53C1030 B0, FwRev=01032920h, Ports=1, MaxQ=128, IRQ=17
It seems OK to me, doesn't it?
Do you have any further trouble shooting I could try?
regards

I presume that this is the only DVB adapter you have? Just worth checking...
I haven't rebooted my server for ages, so I doubt I have anything in my logs that will help.
My 290e appears as a Sony CXD2820R, so that's the driver/firmware we're looking for.
On my system, lsusb does indeed identify it as "Unknown (Pinnacle?)", so your USB connection/passthrough is valid.
Can you do an lsmod | grep em28 to see whether the driver is loaded?
I seem to recall that I upgraded the kernel on my 12.04 system, so it's not impossible that you just don't have the support on the default kernel, something like that.
EDIT
Another thought - sudo service tvheadend restart - just in case it's a timing issue (tvheadend loading before the stick initialises properly).

Once again, thanks for helping me.
Yes that is my only tv tuner connected.
Output from lsmod:
per@ubuntu:~$ lsmod | grep em28
em28xx_rc 13169 0
rc_core 21295 1 em28xx_rc
em28xx_dvb 22528 0
dvb_core 99289 2 cxd2820r,em28xx_dvb
em28xx 85852 2 em28xx_rc,em28xx_dvb
v4l2_common 15794 1 em28xx
videodev 100265 2 em28xx,v4l2_common
videobuf_vmalloc 13337 1 em28xx
videobuf_core 25410 2 em28xx,videobuf_vmalloc
tveeprom 17010 1 em28xx
In theory Ubuntu 12.04 should support the nanostick since it is
Linux kernel 3.2, but that's in theory.
If you have patched Ubuntu in order to have it work, please let
me know how.

Ahhhh,
sudo service tvheadend restart did the trick.
Now I have the Sony CXD2820R in the dropdown.
Thanks a bunch
will start scanning channels
probably will be back for further questions.
Thanks a lot

Excellent - glad it's working.
