TBS 6984 / 6981 Failing in builds from and after 3.3.77 and unusable in 3.3.110
Added by Kjell A. Stormo about 12 years ago
Hello, i'm having problems with these adapters and the latest tvh releases.
Tvh ver 2.99 works ok with both TBS 6984 and TBS 6984, both separat and together on the same machine
1 x TBS 6981 ( two adapers) works stable
1 x TBS 6984 (four adapters) works stable
1 x TBS 6981 + 1 x TBS 6984 works stable
2 x TBS 6984 Works stable
Tvh ver 3.3.78
1 x TBS 6981 ( two adapers) works stable
1 x TBS 6984 (four adapters) works stable
1 x TBS 6981 + 1 x TBS 6984 works stable
2 x TBS 6984 Works stable for 8 - 12 hours, then crashes, then i have to killall tvheadend
When i restart tvheadend some of the adapters work, and some with no signal
then crash after som hours, when i restart tvheadend non of the adapters get any signal,
but they still get new services and muxes when enabeling autodetect muxes
Afer rebooting the machine all adapters ar back working again for some hours, then it starts over again.
Tvh ver 3.3.110
1 x TBS 6981 works
TBS 6984 does not work at all
Tvh ver 3.3.111
Haven't tested the TBS 6981, But TBS 6984 same as ver 3.3.110
Same result on tvo different machines, and four different TBS 6984 cards, at two different locations
I have 3 different machines running Tvheadend:
1: ClearOS 6.3, Tvheadend ver 3.3.78 DVB adapter: (STV090x Multistandard x2) + Happauge HVR 4000
ROCK STABLE for 3 months with 2.99 ver, satble 20 days ver 3.3.78
2: Ubuntu 12.10 now reverted to 3.3.78 with 2 x TBS 6984 (and rebooting every 12 hours)
UNSTABLE
Unusable with 3.3.110 or 3.3.111
This was set up with 1 x TBS 6981 and 6984 and was stable for 6 months with ver 2.99,
no reboot or power loss the whole period
3: Ubuntu 12.04 Tvh ver 3.3.78 1 x TBS 6981 stable for 7 days now.
I also have a friend running 2 x TBS 6984 experiencing the same problems, running ubuntu 12.04 server.
Anyone got any Ide's
This problen is getting worse for very release, so please anyone working at the "DVB-S" section of tvheadend
Best Regards
Kjell A.

Kjell,
Did you switch the TBS driver to MSI mode instead of IRQ mode? This found on TBS forum:
we can be quite sure that problem is related to your environment, i.e. it could be your motherboard or with which devices your 6280 card is sharing IRQs, etc, because we have customers that are IPTV providers and thus running those TBS cards on 24/7 basis in Linux and there are no such problem. so, it's not a general problem and based on that it's IRQ-related it's less likely there is anything we can do in the drivers as far as IRQ are in use (it will become more clear what i mean later in this email).
it could be as simple as that your motherboard is not able to process correctly IRQ interrupts in Linux (which is the legacy way of dealing with interrupts), but it's working good with MSI interrupts (which is the modern way of dealing with interrupts introduced with PCI-Express). so, 6280 is modern hardware with modern Linux driver and it supports both old IRQ interrupts and Message Signal Interrupts (MSI) and thus you can try with using MSI instead IRQ and there is good chance that will get rid of the problem. so, MSI can be activated instead IRQ
in the driver in the following way:
- create file called for example "tbs.conf" in "/etc/modprobe.d" with content like this:
- cat /etc/modprobe.d/tbs.conf
options saa716x_tbs-dvb int_type=1
and then reboot to load the driver with the MSI interrupt support enabled.
After login you can check if MSI mode is enabled by executing:
cat /proc/interrupts
Good luck.

Thank you,
looks like some of my problems have been solved.
But i still have problems with tvh from ver 3.3.110
When trying to map services to channels i get No input detected.
This is not an issue on ver 3.3.78 here all the adapters get input.
Have tested several times with the same config of .hts
Works ok with 3.3.78, failing on all channels from ver 3.3.110 and newer ver.

Update on TBS.
I think the problem regarding two TBS6984 is solved
Have been stable now for 12 hours, continually recording at 4 adapters, and streaming to 4 klients or more.
All adapters still get signal.
But this is only for rev up to ver: 3.3.78
Versions later can scan muxes, find all servises, but are not able to map service to channels.

So did you actually try anything? like the IRQ mod?
Or was/is the problem being caused by some of the recent work that we've been doing (possibly Andreas's full mux stuff).

I changed from IRQ to MSI, that helped, but only for versions untill 3.3.78, does not work after this ver.
But now i do not loos signal from the adapters as i used to.
Still get quite a few of these:

Hello, just tested the latest git.ver 3.3.115
I am able to scan for channels with both 1 and 2 TBS 6984 But No input from adapter.
the same goes for TBS 6981 ( a separate machine)
This mashine adapter uses the cx23885 driver and was allready MSI enabled.
So back to 3.3.77 ver on both machines.

Hi, the only way i found is to revert to ver. git 3.3.78 or get the 3.2 or 3.0 release
