[solved] Does tvheadend support unicable (also known as EN50494) ?
Added by Ludi K. over 5 years ago
Hi,
I am planing to upgrade my satellite installation and am wondering whether to use unicable. The aim would be to use 2 satellite positions (multifeed) and unicable. Unfortunately, I have not been able to determine whether tvheadend has support for it.
Searching the internet for information about tvheadend and unicable, there are some old threads about it, but it is not clear, whether they were using some patch or different branch that might never have made it into mainline. In fact, I am not able to find the "Satconfig" field to specify the use of unicable. Or does that field only appear in the presence of unicable hardware.
There is also newer thread from 2018 stating that tvheadend supports unicable, but reading its content I wonder whether they are not confusing unicable and multifeed.
Thus, could anybody please tell me whether tvheadend supports unicable and where I can find the corresponding setting?
Thanks in advance for your help.

In case you are going to use a DVB-card like the Digital Devices Max S8: yes, it only appears in the presence of the hardware.
In case you are using something like the Digibit R1 or the Inverto idl 400s you won't even notice the presence of unicable within tvh, you just see four tuners.

Digibit R1, Inverto idl 400s, Kathrein and others are relay tuners via SAT>IP protocol.
Tuners with are direct attached can use Unicable

Thanks for the replies.
They explained why I did not see the Satconfig field in tvheadend, even when I configured the Digibit R1 to use unicable. So I installed tvheadend stable version 4.2.8-23~g74cdf3f16 on a linux pc with a dvb-s2 pci card and the Satconfig field was available in tvheadend in its settings for the card.
Thanks for your help.

Perhaps I did not make myself clear in my first post: In case you are using the Digibit R1 you have to carry out the whole unicable configuration within the Digibit R1 itself, not in TvHeadend. After that the Digibit 'provides' four tuners to TvHeadend. TVHeadend doesn't know if the Digibit receives the four signals via unicable or via four separate LNBs.

Hi Tim,
I already assumed from your first reply that tvheadend does not need to know about unicable when connected to a satip server, because it's the satip server that handles the unicable stuff.
Sorry for not having been clear on my side; I don't have any unicable material yet, but since I have to do some changes to my satellite installation, I am considering using unicable in order to be able to supply multiple tuners with only one cable. But before buying anything new, I wanted to make sure that the software I am using is capable of working with it.
Thanks again.
