"www.tvheadend.org" address != "tvheadend.org"

Added by Mono Polimorph over 6 years ago

Hi,

From several weeks the address "www.tvheadend.org" isn't resolved as "tvheadend.org".
Check it here:
http://tvheadend.org
http://www.tvheadend.org

The problem isn't the physical IP address, but the "domain name" resolved by the hosting service (HTTP server).

I suggest to create a redirection file, or change the DNS name; as using some browsers the "tvheadend" homepage is resolved as "www.tvheadend.org".

Regards.

Most recent browsers will include "www." when you type the name. This is the problem!

Yeah! This is right now. However, it doesn't have sense. The address "http://www.tvheadend.org" will need to respond with a REDIRECTION (HTTP response 301 Moved Permanently) to "https://tvheadend.org".

That's all!

What do you mean it "doesn't have sense" and a redirect is needed? There is no redirect needed because the website is not at www.tvheadend.org.

The use of "www" as a host identifier is a carryover from the early days of the internet when it used to be necessary to differentiate between the different services a host provided, such as www, ftp, gopher, mail, etc. Just because you feel that Tvheadend's servers should automatically correct your mistaken preconceptions does not make it so.

The proper host to reach Tvheadend's services is tvheadend.org. www.tvheadend.org is a host that does not exist, so don't try to reach it. (It's a bit like dialing the wrong phone number, but in your case you're expecting the wrong number you keep dialing to somehow be forwarded to the right number. Stop doing that and just dial the correct number.)

Robert, your explanation is correct on a factual basis, nevertheless the first thing a lot of users will use is 'www.tvheadend.org'. Simply because they are used to it.

So it need to register sub-domain, with will return to base domain?
This is pointless.

Yes and no. In general, the types of users who would default to entering a www subdomain by default are most likely the types of users who would generally Google everything, or use the Google search box as if it were the actual address location box. For that group of users, it doesn't generally matter what the actual host is, because it'll be ignored and reached through a search link.

If you make everything conform to legacy ideas, you'll never achieve progress.
