Ubuntu Server keeps shutting down

Added by Billy Reynolds about 13 years ago

From my post on the Ubuntu Server forums...

_____________________________________________________________________________________

Hi Guys, Need some help please.

I'm running Ubuntu Server 11.04 (Tried upgrading to 11.10 but had nothing but headaches) and recently it's started shutting itself down.

The CPU temperatures were getting up to 80c and I assumed it was the computer shutting itself off due to overheating but I've installed a new fan today, my temps are now ranging in the 30s-40s and it's shut itself off again once already.

I recently installed my TV card into the server and managed to get tvheadend installed and working with all my computers in the house using XBMC.

I've read in the forums that Ubuntu can shut off computers due to hardware, you think that the TV card might be the culprit?

I will say that the server never shut itself off before I had the TV card installed so that's my 2nd suspect.

If so, Is there anything I can do to tell Ubuntu to restart instead of shutting down? (A server that shuts itself off isn't much use).

For more info, the TV card in question is a Hauppauge HVR4000 and I have the latest bin file from the windows drivers installed. (As far as I know the firmware is embedded in Ubuntu itself so that should be up to date, yes?)

Thanks in advance

_____________________________________________________________________________________

I replaced the CPU cooler and the temps were fine, someone suggested he had the same symptoms and it was a failing power supply, so I replaced the power supply and the computer is still shutting itself down.

I've seen a few posts around the net saying Ubuntu shuts itself down due to hardware problems so I'm looking at the tv card (Not tv headend!) as the culprit. Obviously this is really annoying cos I wanted to have the home server as a full media server, movies, tv and livetv.

Has anyone else had these problems? What TV cards are people using and is there a guide to which tv cards are best?

Thanks for your help guys

What do the logs tell you? Is there any indication what caused the shutdown?

Found the logs, which one would tell me?

I've tried having a look in them and the kern.log seems to have a gap from about 5am to 11am when I turned the server back on so I'm guessing it turned itself off around 5am.

Here's a slab of the log :

This section shows the version of the firmware for what I assume is my TV card (Hauppauge HVR4000), the card does work but does anyone know if the version is correct, or is it embedded in the kernel?

I also saw this, would this cause a crash/shutdown?

I really want to keep the tv card in the server but I have to say I never had the server shutdown before installing the tv card and tvheadend, I know tvheadend won't be the culprit but I have read around the net that some hardware can cause Ubuntu to shut down the computer and now I know it's not the CPU cooler or the power supply, my only real culprit seems to be the TV card.

Thanks for any help :)

Well, thanks for the flood of replies lol

I've taken the TV card out and the server has remained on and functioning fine ever since so obviously the TV card was the culprit, I guess Ubuntu has a long way to go to be a dependable home media solution

Hello.

I have a similar setup to you:-

Ubuntu server 10.04.3 LTS
TVheadend 2.12
DVB - S Nova HD WinTV
DVB - T Nova SD WinTV

The server has being running for over a year 24/7 with no problems.

I would buy a cheap Hauppauge WINTV-NOVA-T off ebay, to see if your Hauppauge HVR4000 is faulty (I paid £10 for mine).

Dont give up, its worth taking the time to get it right.
