New install - Can see DVB-S not DVB-S2
Added by Jon Fear about 13 years ago
Hi All
I am running Centos 5.7 and have managed to get my Happauge Nova HD (HVR4000 Lite) working in the system. I can scan all the DVB-S transponders OK but the DVB-S2 all seem to fail. I am now at a total loss! Can anyone please point me in the right direction, what have I done wrong?
Thanks
Jon

can you scan them using the standard dvb-apps tools? First make sure that you can use you adapter via the standard command line programs. This to make sure that all the drivers are working correctly.

Hi Hein
OK, using scan "scan /usr/share/dvb/dvb-s/Astra-28.2E" has thrown up the fact that it cannot see the BBC HD transponder on 10847 V. The results are:
Network Name 'ASTRA'
tune to: 10788:v:0:22000
DVB-S IF freq is 1038000

WARNING: >>> tuning failed!!!

As you can see, DVB-S is fine, just the all important DVB-S2.
I am way over my head here, no error messages in the dmesg:

Reading through this devices wiki page at linuxtv.org it turns out that you need to use scan-s2 to scan the channels. Also I am not sure if tvheadend works with the s2api that is needed to access the dvb-s2 frequencies.....

Looking back at other messages it looks like dvb-s2 is supported, but I also see that people have problems with your specific device. Please make sure you the latest drivers and firmware for your device/kernel combination.
Hein.

I might be being a little simplistic here, but I also have problems with the new BBC transponder. It's actually due to its frequency change, and is now prone to noise quite badly from poor cable runs, under-powered LNB's etc, basically I cannot tune to it either and its down to this rather than any issue with my DVB card.

Hi All
Many thanks to all posters, sorry for not replying sooner but...
Here is where we are.
I have checked the drivers within my Centos box all appears to be well, indeed it does pick up the Channel 4 HD channel which is DVB-S2.
I am fortunate enough to have a Windoze machine that I could put the card into. I have done this and installed all the current drivers.
On scan under various apps, the BBC HD channels refuse to show themselves, whilst Channel 4HD is there. So this appears to be a cable problem as suggested by Andy, however this is a new run with a high grade cable coming off a high quality quad output LNB. BBC HD is seen on the other outlets by another box using the same type of cable. All other channels are storming in with 100% signal and > 98% quality. When I have time, I will pull out the ladder and change the PCI card feed to the other outlet. A thought might be that I am getting too much signal?
This appears to be a wierd fault...more as it develops, hopefully with a solution.
Cheers
Jon

Hm,
I'm just trying to get more info, as I had bought brand new high grade cable, wired all up, new connectors, relatively new LNB, but had this problem, so gave up and just assumed I'd screwed up somewhere. I'm starting to think differently now.
I've searched for the official BBC document on this transponder:
Astra 2D (28.2° East)
Transponder 50 (aka 2.050)
Frequency: 10.84700 GHz
Vertical polarisation
Modulation: DVB-S2, QPSK
Symbol rate: 23.0 Mbaud
FEC 8/9
Transport Stream ID: 2050
See the 23Mbaud, not 22? So am thinking of deleting the automatically added entry and putting in the MUX myself, and trying again to see what results I get.
Will post back on my results of testing.

Hi Andy
Mine has been set to 23000 and does not work. It does seem to be an issue with either the cable or LNB as no one else is talking about this fault. I will be up the ladder tomorrow after the Rugby to change the LNB connection to see if that helps. I wonder if I have too much signal as I am on a zone 2 dish?
More tomorrow!
