Multiple recording dirs
Added by C G almost 9 years ago
Hello there,
I recently switched from a DVBViewer/Windows configuration to TVheadend on Ubuntu 15.04. I am relatively new to Linux and completely new to Tvheadend, but I got everything working, reading docs and forums for the past day and a half.
So please forgive me if I'm missing the obvious, I'm astonished myself that I haven't been able to find anything on this matter: I have several HDDs of various sizes in the PC where Tvheadend is running on. I would like to use all HDDs for the recordings, so that if one HDD runs out of space, the other HDDs will be used.
In Configuration > Recording I can only set one Recording System Path. Is there a way to define multiple paths? If that's not possible within Tvheadend, maybe someone could show me a way to mount (sorry if that's not the correct term in this case, I haven't got my head wrapped around the mounting/unmounting concept yet, coming from Windows...) multiple drives (or better: recording dirs on multiple drives) to one path that can be supplied as the recording path in Tvheadend?
Thanks in advance
Connum

Over on the left of the screen, you should see a profile name. If you don't, you're probably on a very old version...
Assuming you do, that's what you need. A recording profile is a way of taking all of those parameters on that page, and saving them together as a template. So, for example, you may want a different profile for different channels or programme types - maybe with different pre/post padding, maybe with a different container type, maybe a different post-processor command - and, crucially for you, perhaps with a different recording directory path.
Have a look. That's what you need. You can then select the relevant profile either when you schedule a one-off recording, or as part of an automatic recording rule.

Hi, thanks for your reply.
Yes, I do see the recording profile (so far I have only the default one). I'm running version 4.0.8, I should have mentioned that in my post.
So there's no automatic way for tvheadend to detect "whoops, the disc is full, I'll use the next free one", but instead I have to distribute my recordings to the different discs by rules? That's a real pity then... Maybe it's something for the devs to think about including in future versions. I can't imagine I'm the only person that would find this useful.
Or is there any way to work around this restriction?

you could create one big volume from all of your drives, check out LVM, or some software raid solution...
just be aware in case of lvm if one drive fails, you'll lose everything...
mhddfs is another option...
