Stream tvheadend to a different device

Added by Rob Mccombe almost 9 years ago

Hi guys,

So my last question on here and all should be achieved :)

I currently have tvheadend setup on my server to stream to kodi devices around my house which works perfect.

How would I stream to a device that isn't on my home network.

Here is the example of what I want to achieve..

Kodi is installed on my phone with tvheadend pvr client. Say I want to to let the kids watch tv on my phone from my server at home whilst we are out, what details would I need to put into tvheadend htps client within Kodi to make this work.

At the moment it's 192.168.0.19 but this is the local address I've tried my actual up in there but no luck, it says failed to connect.

Thanks

You have two basic methods as far as I know...

1. Set up port forwarding on your router, so that anything that connects to <your-ISP-provided-address>:9000 gets forwarded to 192.168.0.19:9000. This is easy, but not the most secure, as it means anyone connecting to that port would have access to tvh - you'd only have your tvh credentials to secure things

2. Set up a VPN server (standalone or on your router if it supports it) and then bring up a VPN connection from your 'phone to that server. This effectively makes your 'phone into a secure part of your home LAN, although (unless there's some kind of split tunnelling) it takes it off the cellular data network at the same time. That means that browsing the web from your handset would actually loop back to your house and back out again... which might actually be a good thing if you use parental controls on the URLs (for example).
