Distro / Kernel for Intel QSV transcoding

As I was not yet able to get QSV transcoding working, what distro / kernel was tested successfully? As I understand, Intel Media SDK must be installed to get it working. I tried with Intel Media Server Studio R6 on Debian Jessie with kernel 3.14.5 (patches applied), did go through the installation document line by line on a fresh install but it seems that I'm still missing something.
As I will get some Skylake HW for testing soon, which will not work with kernel 3.14.5, are there other options to run QSV encoding? What about Intel Graphics Stack from 01.org?
I'm somehow lost, so it would be great if someone could share his experience

I'd suggest you pop onto #hts on freenode and see if lekma is on - he's been working on hardware accelerated transcoding recently (using VAAPI, I think, which I presume interfaces with QSV). You might at least find someone who fully understands the question :)
