DVB-T OK need advise on DVT-T2
Added by Jim Learmonth over 9 years ago
I purchased a USB dongle off ebay for about £6.00, didn't expect much.
It came with a dongle, Win CD, aerial and remote.
On windows it was rubbish you might as well bin the Win CD, aerial and remote.
I popped the dongle into my Linux server and tvheadend found :
Realtek RTL2832 (DVB-T) : DVB-T #0
I didn't do much with it at the time.
Recently got a new Raspberry PI 2 and set up as home server.
Plugged dongle into that and built tvheadend from source.
Bingo ... All my XBMC clients can now play/record Tv and Radio with EPG.
VERY impressed.
I think the dongle shown above is SD only.
I see some items on ebay such as
USB TV Stick DVB-T2 /T/C +FM+DAB+SDR Recorder Receiver RTL2832P+R828D+MN88427 WT
Seems to be the same chip i.e. RTL2832P
Need more info on this HD thing and what's required, please advise.
Thanks
Jim

You need to do some homework on the precise stick - chipset is a good indicator of support, but it's not univeral. Broadly, you need appropriate firmware in /lib/firmware (which may be installable as a package or you may need to find it separately, e.g. from the OpenElec github repository), and you need a driver (which may be built into your kernel or you may need to build it separately by compiling V4L).
A little bit more information here:
http://docs.tvheadend.org/before_you_begin/
Not sure how the Pi2 handles MPEG-4/H.264 (which is the typical codec for HD) and whether there are any implications as there were for licensing MPEG-2 - I don't think so, I think H.264 was free but MPEG-2 and VC-1 were extras.
Watch the I/O speed on a Pi as well, as the USB ports share bandwidth with your Ethernet port. It shouldn't be a problem in normal use, but don't expect to have multiple HD streams as well as constant network traffic - something will get dropped. And you'll probably need a powered hub from what I've read elsewhere.
All Pi-related comments apocryphal: I have one, but don't use it for media at all so have no direct experience.

OK thanks for the info.
I will have a look at the links.
It's a knowledge gathering exercise.
Even so the SD I have is so good I might just stick with that.
Thanks again
