Stuttering after some time
Added by Klaus D. over 9 years ago
Hi,
I have the problem that after some time (I guess 30-60 minutes) watching a stream with VLC it starts to stutter. If I log in to the TVH web interface and look at status/subscriptions, I see that 'output' is lower than 'input'. So, for whatever reason the stream cannot be transmitted in "real time" anymore.
When I stop the stream in VLC and immediately restart it everything is normal again for the next 30-60 minutes.
My equipment:- Raspberry Pi with latest TVH (4.1.12~g0e5ec2a), but also tried 3.9 with no effect on this problem
- 2 tuners (PCTV 292e)
- DVB-C
- Network: TP-Link Powerline AV500 (connection/data rate is stable and well above 100 MBit )
- Stream is http with "pass" profile
- Client: Thinkpad T520 with VLC version 2.2.0
Do you have any ideas how I can debug this problem? Where to look at?
I am thankful for every hint as this is really annoying!
Bye,
Klaus

Thoughts...
- Does it work if you connect directly, bypassing the Powerline stuff? Could it be interference?
- Are there caching settings in VLC (I know they're there somewhere, and network is different to local) that make any difference?
- Does it happen on all channels, or only higher-bitrate ones?
- Is anything else streaming from the Pi at the same time? Do you have a NIC bottleneck rather than a LAN issue?
- (Similar to no.4) Is anything else happening that could be causing issues - IO to the SD card, RAM IO, CPU use? Anything that could slow the Pi down and make it less able to serve the streams?
- Is everything okay if you record the streams (just to make sure the Pi can actually keep up with the signal in the first place)?
- Is it okay if you record a stream and then watch it (or something else) over NFS or SMB at the same time (just wondering about the interference angle - HTSP vs a file protocol - UDP vs TCP)?
- Do you have a different client to test - does it work on a different laptop?
- (Similar to no.8) Does it work in different software, e.g. Kodi?
Not sure they're really hints, but it's where I'd start to look, at least...

Thank you for your thoughts.
I did some random changes to my configuration and it seems that it is working now (knocking on wood).
- I turned off debug logging to syslog (I enabled it some time ago)
- I checked "Force old status" in adapter settings
- I unchecked "Rewrite PAT" for the pass stream profile
- I recompiled media_build
I don't know which of those settings is the one that fixed my problem, but it is now running stable without stuttering, but I see some continuity errors from time to time...

You sir are a life saver! The Force old status did it for me!
I made an account just to reply.
If anyone has stutter issues on capable hw enable this setting.
Note:I am running tvheadend inside docker.
