Hello!
I saw today the version is increased. Could someone give me (us) more information about the version change?
Thanks for the information!

The same as you would any other master codebase - you clone it from Github, and build it locally. Or you install it from the unstable repo.
As I understand it... to help clarify ... a version 4.0 is now on the horizon. It will basically be the old 3.9 but with further bug fixes - there will be few if any new features, though, as it moves towards alpha, beta and release. Any new features will go into the master branch, will will form the basis of 4.1 or later releases.
For the moment, the big news is that we have line of sight to a release that will replace 3.4 and 3.5 with a new, stable build.

The latest in the unstable repo for trusty is 2827, the 4.1 version is only available for utopic.

The next stable release will the 4.0 (3.9.28xx + bugfixes) and the 4.1.x releases will the next unstable.
Is there any bigger "official" announcement planned?
The new 4.0 will GPLv2?
Btw thank you guys the quick respond!

More news soon: 4.0 has been added to the roadmap now, and I'm sure you'll see 4.1+ there with 'futures' once perexg/Jaroslav has some time. Additionally, some folks are working on the build system to generally improve that as well, so that will be fixed in due course. In the meantime, you can always change your /etc/apt/sources.list file to point to a different version, and it should work without issue as it doesn't have any weird dependencies (it looks like there was a build problem, I don't see any reason why Trusty would be deliberately left out).
Again, please remember that 4.1 is a moving target as it's the development branch. If you want to move to 4.0 and get something that's changing less often or only changing with debugging, you'll have to check out the code, switch to the 4.0 branch and build it yourself from time to time until an alpha or beta deb is available.

Great news about the new organisation of the releases
However, as an APT user/installer - I'm still a bit confused about what's delivered by each APT repo, and what they represent...
As it stands, I'm an unstable user, as that is (was?) the main APT means of getting a 3.9 release with all the nice newer stuff. I won't ever be building from source, and I think that might be true of quite a few new users that (at least initially) come across tvheadend.
Would it be possible to clarify what's currently being delivered, version-wise and it terms of updates, by the APT repos both now and (with this announcement) in the the near future? Maybe on the download page itself: https://tvheadend.org/projects/tvheadend/wiki/AptRepository ?

Again, patience, please... nothing's actually been announced yet...
As it stands, stable will give you 3.4, beta gives you 3.5 (I think) and unstable gives you master (which is now 4.1+). There's obviously an issue with builds for all platforms on unstable/master (hence the missing distros), and there's nothing for 4.0 (pre-release/testing/pre-beta).
We're discussing how best to get testing/unstable builds out to people. Watch this space!

Ah, OK, I'm with you - understood .
Great to see this work on tvheadend, btw, I'm now a full convert from Argus TV.
