TV HeadEnd to broadcast DVD, TV etc.
Added by Matthew Amies almost 10 years ago
Hi All,
I have very limited experience using TVHeadEnd and last time I had tried I failed (I believe to my television signal). I was trying to broadcast my television over the network using Raspberry Pi's.
Anyway I would like to try and build something for my small club which involves having a TVHeadEnd server setup. This server would broadcast signals from:- A BlueRay Player
- The Normal TV Antenna
- 3 feeds from a Third Party system (Keno http://playkeno.com.au/)
I would like to then have a Raspberry Pi (or similar device) sitting at each television which then relays whatever feed is selected onto the television.
Just wondering on peoples thoughts about this. I have attached a JPEG of what I believe it should look like.
Thanks in advance,
Matt

I don't know that you can do all of this in tvheadend, but you could probably do it with a combination of tvheadend (for TV), makemkv (for BluRay), VLC (for other streams) or maybe negge's proxy (https://github.com/Jalle19/node-ffmpeg-mpegts-proxy) to feed these other streams into tvheadend. You'd need to look in and have a flounder.

Thanks Prof Yaffle.
I was just thinking that the bluray might be a little difficult to do. I have come to this conclusion because most BluRays and DVDs have menus which will restrict them from playing the video but just a loop.
As for the normal TV signal I am sure I can get to work with some persistance.
With Keno's 3 feeds I was hoping that the Coax cable would be able to be plugged into a TV Tuner (or similar) and have those channels added to the Channel list.
At some point I would like to have advertising on the device but this may need to come later.
Thanks,

Well, you have the small matter of DRM on the BR discs as well, so something needs to decode that and then relay the stream. Makemkv does precisely that, although not via a TV channel - you'd need a modulator for that - which do exist, so that is an option. Indeed, you may even get a hardware modulator that can take a BR player output and turn it into an RF signal, but I suspect the DRM would stop this (e.g. the protection built into HDMI). To a great extent, it depends on what's legal in your country and whether you have any (ahem) supply lines for alternatives.
What you can do with Keno's feeds depends to a very great extent on what format they're in.

Thanks.
I have just got off the phone to the Keno Representative I was speaking to and he says that he they are able to be directly connected to the TV using RCA cables.
This had me thinking that could I possibly use a capture card to relay the video via the network or would this require makemkv to be connected as well.
Thanks,

A capture card might work - the fact that they're RCA implies that it's a straight analogue signal (A/V line in) so something has to either convert that to an RF signal (modulator) or an IP signal. A capture card might work for the latter, but you'd need to check; I don't think makemkv would do that, although you could do the same with an RCA output from a DVD or BluRay. I suspect HDCP would prevent full 1080p glory on the latter, though, but that might not be a problem for you.
VLC is pretty good at rebroadcasting, and there's still negge's proxy above. If you can capture the RCA stream in some way and store it to disc in the right format then either would potentially re-broadcast over IP in some way. At this point, I'm probably way beyond the point at which I'm making educated guesses and heading towards pure guesswork, though...!

Thanks Prof Yaffle,
That gives me a bit to play with. I will go hunting for a cheap capture card to see if I can stream its broadcast.
Thanks again for your help. I will let you know how I go.
