what processor etc for new server

Added by ultimate h about 10 years ago

Hi Guys,

I am new here and have been reading into creating a server for some time now and I want to go ahead and create something nice. I am looking at installing a couple of quad dvb-s2 cards for flexibility but I need to know what sort of processor, ram and hard disk is recommended.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers

You don't need much - if you think of the throughput from a DVB-S2 stream, think of all four together, and compare that to a SATA III I/O rate, you'll quickly see that most systems can handle it. It's more a case of what else you're looking at: transcoding needs CPU grunt; using it as a desktop/HTPC as well needs Graphics; filesystems (e.g. ZFS) can need RAM. Most true file servers can get away with very low-power CPUs.

Depends if you want to use transcoding or not. If not you dont need much. If yes you need alot of cpu with dual quad. Ram is not important and disk could be large if you want to store alot of dvr recordings
