Next stable release
Added by Philipp Helmer over 10 years ago
Hello everybody,
Im using TVH every day as backend on Ubuntu for my XBMC HTPC#s. It works perfect exept of some little things: Timeshift and channelsorting.
Is there planed a new stable release of THV? Can i use an unstable version for my dayly use? Which version i have to use then ?
Can you give me some information, please
Thank you !
Philipp

TVHeadend Is an opensource project and as such is coded when anyone who knows how to code has some spare time to do this. No one is paid to work on this and as such there is no planned anything. a stable release is just that, stable. and since there is still plenty of bugs in the master then a stable is a way off.
Rule 1 of open source projects.
DON'T ASK WHEN IT WILL BE RELEASED.
you can use the master version for your daily use but since your asking these questions I'm going to advise you to stick to the latest in your os's repository

Many of us are using self-build (indeed, self-hacked ) versions from master for daily use. Sometimes a new addition will cause a crash, and there may be some odd behaviours, but on the whole it's perfectly stable and perfectly useable for daily use. Indeed, my kids would poke me with something sharp if that were not the case.

Your question is VERY appropriate!!! Due to lack of time there is (sometimes) no answer from Adam or other project heads. Thats the nature of non-commercial projects. Some
deep thoughts of Adam to this can you find here: https://tvheadend.org/news/58
On the other hand: The project itself suggested the release structure "stable", "beta", "unstable". But for the time beeing it is NOT supported.
Prof. Yaffle, you are a very active member here in the forum. Can you please ask Adam and Co. when we will get a beta release, or next stable? At least half of the TVE users are not developer or hacker.
@Gary Brown
May be I missed the irony button, but there isn't a correlation between opensource project and poor release management.
Your answer is deleoper-centric. The question wasn't it.
...but we will have a "natural" solution soon: In a few days the project reaches the build version number v3.9.999 (irony off).

Be careful that your experience may heavily depend on the feature you use. I remember you gave up using MKV for example. IPTV is completely broken for me on ADSL as the stream is never closed (and I cannot have two simultaneous HD STREAM).
There are open bugs pilling up on the subject. Also, when adam sent his alarming message requesting for help, it was suggested by many that a stable release should happen.
Here I see many new features development which is fine but no minimal time spend on bug fixing except for the new feature. Many people are using whatever is packaged by a distribution, but distribution maintainers are reluctant to use snapshots if they are never sure their git revision is appropriate and the bug will be fixed in an acceptable time slot.

What I said was not poor Managment of the project but a common fact that an opensource project normally doesn't set dates for releases of stables (any that do normally miss the release date due to some unknown bugs appearing.)
There are some major bugs in the code that need to be worked out before a Stable can even be thought of. Others (Perexg mainly) are working on the code to Fix any little bugs they find while trying to finish the rewrite that Adam Started but never fully finished or bug free.
I know there is a bug in the inital scan code that stops the rotor code from working. this is a big bug to be fixed as the code is inside the timer/callback system used that allows constant usage of the system while a tuner waits for rotors to turn and any other delays needed during the tuning process. There is also the IPTV side that is getting fixed and improved (cannot comment further on this side as don't use it at all).
I originally replied in a hurry as it was a quick scan of the forum but after rereading your post your mentioning you are wanting a new stable to fix timeshift and channel sorting.
with timeshift the problem doesn't lie in the tvheadend side but the xbmc pvr side there is "bad code" causing the problem. have a read of this topic on xbmc.org http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=187521
could you explain what you mean by channel sorting is not working. is this in xbmc or tvheadend? if it's xbmc then your missing a setting in your live tv settings page, just click on the synchronise channels with back end option and after a quick reset of the pvr database (may not be needed) the channels should sort into the order of the tvheanded setup. If this is not what you mean please explain.
If these above are the two problems your ok to stick with your version of tvheadend if not I'll see what I can do/advise.

Fair comment. I think for most normal users, the core functionality is sound and stable, but your mileage may vary with other features.
It would be perhaps wise to draw a line under features pretty soon and branch a formal 3.9 or even 4.0 release. There's also pvr.tvh to throw into the mix as the other side of how many people use tvheadend. Let's see if one of the main developers can offer an opinion, as I know Adam has a grand plan somewhere (probably down the back of the sofa)... I'll pose the question on #hts otherwise, although anyone is free to do that.

From a comment on one of the PRs, 4.0 will branch "soon", apparently.

Prof Yaffle, thanks for information! If the team is interested in end user tests of some release candidates please let me know.

Hello,
@Gary Brown
Thanks for the in formation with the pvr-"frontend". The new code you mentioned in the link does not work:
TV works fine, but skipping in a recording forward and backwards take much time. (Press the ship-Button, wait 10 to 15 seconds, then the recording plays at the new point) It is not possible to scroll. I have installes the newest version 0.9.2.
So i reinstalled the "original version" that comes with xbmc, there is no problem with skipping... but no time shifting.
@all
nice to hear that there will be an new version soon !

Just remember...
Intent <> guarantee
and
Branch <> release
... so there's some time yet. But it's at least on the to-do list.

I hope IPTV will be fixed before. There are at least 5 bugs saying IPTV is completely broken for some of us.
