Sky TV using TVHeadend

Added by Kelvin Brotherston almost 11 years ago

Hi All.

Sorry if this ha been posted before but I haven't been able to find it.

I currently have sky and is it a lot so the subscription is worth having, but I would like to be able to have everything I have now on the sky box (channels, HD, Sports, Movies etc.) but musing this instead so I can share it to my RaspnerryPi's running XBMC.

Is there a setup guide for doing this or is it known it doesn't / can't work.

Sorry if a duplicate but after much searching I haven't been able to find anything that says one way or the other with any certainty and this that say you can don't say who which is no real use to anyone.

Thanks.

I've never looked into it, but I think you need to search out card servers. Some phsycal boxes (e.g. TBS does one - the MOI) come with the ability to read the smartcard, otherwise you need a card reader to take the codes off the card and publish them via a software card server (OScam is a good place to start, I think). tvheadend then decrypts the channel stream by talking to that card server.

There are discussions on this board, although you need to bear in mind that you're on the shady side of the law (since you could just by cloning someone else's card once the codes are in software).

Sky are bringing in new security measures that requires the card in the original box to recieve HD and premium channels unless you are using a certain type of Sky box (Thompson brand) you will either already be locked down or will be locked down very soon. best thing to do is to research this fact before continuing at all.

Without this new problem it's easy to setup your card to use in tvheadend. you would need a usb card reader(omnikey for example). have oscam access this and pass the info to tvheadend. settings are available with a little search of the internet.

doing this is not against the law at all but will be a breach of the contract with sky as you agree to only use the card in there box and this is partly why sky are locking the cards to the box as well (other part is card sharing).

The instructions I used for FreesatFromSky are at https://tvheadend.org/boards/4/topics/9699

If you drop the line from oscam.user which says
"services = skyuk_freeview"
then you will get access to the SD channels (that your viewing card gives you access too) but not the HD ones for the reasons mentioned by Garry (that's when I borrow my house mates card which has a non-premium subscription so I can't comment on the premium stuff - new sub so already locked down I believe).

Works perfectly fine on the Freesat From Sky stuff so is good enough for me.
