Hardware setup for IPTV
Added by ruud - almost 14 years ago
Hi,
currently I have a DVB-C setup as follows:
Cable entry point > Splitter > Internet modem (provider) > Amplifier > analog TV's > Technotrend CT3650CI DVB-C > USB > TVheadend Server > USB Card reader > TVheadend Server
In my neighborhood they are implementing a fiber network with which I can have TV, Telephone and internet.
The fiber provider claims that they can provide Analog and DVB-c over their fiber. I asume that their fiber modem does some conversion to analog and dvb-c. In that case I can reuse my DVB-c tuner.
But I gues they would also have the possibility to provide TV content over IPTV. I would prefer that setup because then I am not limitted (assumption) by expensive DVB-C devices.
Can somebody 'draw' me the picture of what is needed on appliances up until the tvheadend server?
Thanks,
Ruud.

Pretty much an ethernet cable from the internet modem/switch to the Tvheadend machine. (You probably already have this though)
There are some IPTV providers that sends the IPTV streams on a different VLAN. You can usually tell by the fact that plugging a normal computer in the ethernet port designated for IPTV won't work (you can't access the internet)
Secondly you need to configure the IP Multicast group and ports of each channel in the IPTV configuration grid in Tvheadend.
The IP multicast groups used by your provider is something you need to find out yourself.
Either on some kind of forum that knows about this for your IPTV network or you need to sniff it (using wireshark or similar) when watching TV with the regular set top box.

Hi Andreas, Thanks for you explanation.
I guess that next to this I also get a smart card for descrambling the subscribed channels or is this not the way this works?
Is there also a limit as to how many programs that can be recorded simultaneously, as there is no hardware involved (other then a additional network card on the TVheadend server, can the IPTV be cloned x times?
Thanks in advance,
Regards,
Ruud.

Yeah, I know that some people have reported descrambling IPTV successfully with Tvheadend's code-word-client (CWC)
re the number of simultaneous channels it depends on the downlink capacity and If the upstream router/switches add some kind of limitation to that.
assuming there are no imposed limitations and that a normal channel is around 5Mbps you can do the math yourself. 100mbps == 20 channels (roughly)

Thanks Andreas,
for me than this is the way to go for the future... no more hassles with hardware, drivers and limitations.
Only possible limitation could be the correct working of the subscription card via the CWC...
Good to know!

Ruud.

I have this TT CT-3650 dvb card too, I try to use this with tvheadend but no chance ... I try a lot of drivers but nothing works ...
With s2-liplianin I can see dvb-c card ok but when I start tvheadend dvb-c card crash.
Can you tell me what I do wrong ???
With TT S2-3650 and tvheadend all works ok.
