Synology ds211j + tvheadend + openelec
Added by Ales Zovinec almost 11 years ago
Hello, I would like to build tvheadend fronted on Synology ds211j and watch tv on openelec as a client. I do not know what USB tuner must be used for compatibility and whether it will be enough ds211j s performance on HD channels. I would like to receive DVB-S2 signal from Astra 23.5 E (Skylink). Ma anyone have experience with that?
Thank you

IIRC (and it was some time ago), the kernel on the Synology boxes isn't exactly cutting-edge, so you get into problems with newer tuners unless you can compile your own V4L to bring it up to date. In practical terms, that means older DVB-T sticks work well, DVB-S less likely, DVB-T2 less so and DVB-S2 are even more of a challenge. Last time I looked, you needed to use Video Station (Video Centre?) to load the stick, and Synology were only supporting DVB-T on that anyway.
So, unless someone can contradict me with "I have this, it works!", you may need to do some more homework to find what's installed on the box and how you can modify it.

I have a synology rs812. Tvheadend works just fine with a dvb-c tuner. cpu usage is very acceptable, about 30%.
The tuner compatibility is limited, so choose your tuner with care. I use a TT-connect CT-3650 CI.
I use xbmc as a frontend.
