Bug #1734
Write error -- Broken pipe

Description
Most of the time watching tv in XBMC works fine, but sometimes I start getting these errors:
May 15 15:18:12.115 htsp: 192.168.1.137: Welcomed client software: XBMC Media Center (HTSPv8) May 15 15:18:13.158 htsp: 192.168.1.137 [ XBMC Media Center ]: Identified as user skerit May 15 15:18:13.159 htsp: 192.168.1.137 [ skerit | XBMC Media Center ]: Privileges raised May 15 15:18:15.247 htsp: 192.168.1.137 [ skerit | XBMC Media Center ]: Write error -- Broken pipe May 15 15:18:15.258 htsp: 192.168.1.137 [ skerit | XBMC Media Center ]: Disconnected May 15 15:18:16.303 htsp: Got connection from 192.168.1.137 May 15 15:18:17.342 htsp: 192.168.1.137: Welcomed client software: XBMC Media Center (HTSPv8) May 15 15:18:18.383 htsp: 192.168.1.137 [ XBMC Media Center ]: Identified as user skerit May 15 15:18:18.383 htsp: 192.168.1.137 [ skerit | XBMC Media Center ]: Privileges raised May 15 15:18:19.430 htsp: 192.168.1.137 [ skerit | XBMC Media Center ]: Write error -- Broken pipe May 15 15:18:19.443 htsp: 192.168.1.137 [ skerit | XBMC Media Center ]: Disconnected
And that just keeps on happening when I switch to a new channel.
I have to restart tvheadend to fix it.
Does anyone know the cause of this and how I can fix it permanently?

Looks like XBMC is broken, please can you provide an XBMC debug log so I can confirm whether or not that is the case.
Also a full debug log from TVH would help.

Sure, here's the debug log for TvHeadend.
Here, after a while, I had problems with the BBC HD channels. They would fail and cause a broken pipe problem.
(For some reason the debug log says "Gebroken pijp", which is dutch for broken pipe)
The other channels (on other cards) still worked.
Updated by Adam Sutton over 11 years ago
I need to see the XBMC debug log as well, I still think this looks like an XBMC issue, though I cannot be sure without seeing what the other end is doing.

Here you go.
First I chose channel Canvas HD, then I tried a BBC HD channel (which failed) and then I tried regular BBC (which worked)

The tvheadend log starts at 15:58:20, the xbmc log starts at 16:02. It took a while to get it going, but it's the same.
(I added 2 new files in my previous update)
Updated by Adam Sutton over 11 years ago
Ah, I missed the few log statements at the end of the file, the problem is that the entire period of importance is empty?
But it kinda looks a bit like XBMC is getting upset and killing the connection, but I'd like to be able to tie up the two logs before I look in too much detail.

Oh right, now I see there isn't much info there for tvheadend.
I started it with this command, though. Shouldn't there be more information?
tvheadend -u hts -g video -d -l /var/log/tvheadend.log
Updated by Adam Sutton over 11 years ago
There should yes, it almost looks like TVH is getting no connection.

I can confirm this behaviour. In my case XBMC even keeps disconnecting/reconnecting when nothing is played.
It got even worse since I updated to TVH 3.4
Sometimes it works and I can play a channel, but very often I get the "Disconnected" message.
I have a Raspi with Raspbmc. Same behaviour with Openelec and Xbian.
Also TVHRemote (IOS) is reacting very slowly with 3.4
Recording is fine.

I have the same issue. Very intermittant, but it would be great if we can get to the bottom of it. I have experimented with having my openelec device and a tablet simultaneously attached to TVheadend, both streaming the same channel and they will drop out together, which suggests to me it is a TVHeadend issue? One is wired, one wireless.
Here is the content of the logs (only openelec attached for this one unfortuantely);
TVHeadend debug log (ie: from the web interface log panel);

Let me know if there is anything more I can provide to assist. I now have two seperate channels (same mux, I only have one adapter) on the two devices, if I get another drop out I will update the ticket.
Thanks for any time you can put in on this, and for all the work you are doing!

I'm pretty certain this, like several other issues, is related to XBMC issues and not TVH.
If people are still seeing this and can provide a definitive set of debug logs from both ends, even better with some network captures. I might re-consider looking at it.

I also see this on a regular basis and can probably provide better logs than the ones I've attached.... if I knew how to capture them.
Let me know if you require more.

Why is this issue rejected - i still experience the same as other people here, even when not watching tv.
looks like a connection drop everytime there is DHCP renew on the TVH server. i just replaced a router from dlink to netgear and the problem started to appear ,noticed that the netgear is releasing DHCP every 20-30 minutes. exactly this time i get disconenct reconenct message in XBMC.

Hi,
Those of you who are having this problem, can you please tell me what PVR client you are using? If using pvr.tvh, go to its settings, Data transfer and tell us if you are using Asynchronous EPG transfer.
I had this exact problem too, and after enabling the above mentioned option, it no longer disconnects.
PS: I'm connecting over WAN, several countries apart.

I have similar issues, all around deleting recordings. I can replicate various behaviours, e.g.
On all: windows KODI connected + web frontend open
1.- KODI in TV-recordings listing
- delete some files on web front end
- KODI looses connection
- start playback of tv-recording on KODI
- on web frontend delete some recordings
- playback stops, KODI cannot reconnect until all deletes are completed
I have attached the KODI log file on the 2nd example, here the webfrontend output:

Many thanks for taking the time to reply!
I am unsure if I should update to 4.1 as not an official release.
I also see 4.2 may be released soon.
I'll hang in a few weeks and see what happens.
