Bug #1480
UK post-digital switchover of DVB-T not reflected in UK dvb-scan files
0%
Description
The United Kingdom is now 100% digital on its terrestrial DVB-T services, but it does look like the
source tvheadend is using for its dvb-scan/dvb-t/uk-* files is seriously out-of-date - I suspect many
of the 81 files supplied are pre-digital switchover (i.e. years out of date :-( ) and therefore
completely unusable.
Here's one I'm actively using as an example:
Moel-Y-Parc transmitter - services north-east Wales and extends its reach into
north-west England too (which is where I live). This went digital several years ago
and its Wikipedia entry is one of the few places I found all its frequency info (none
of the "official" transmitter sites don't seem to bother!):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moel-y-Parc_transmitting_station
There was a frequency adjustment last month that dropped stuff like Channel 5 until
I re-tuned, but the "14 November 2012 - present" table is exactly the one I'm using for
tvheadend right now:
618.166 MHz
642.000 MHz
666.000 MHz
689.833 MHz
713.833 MHz
722.000 MHz
However, when I look at dvb-scan/dvb-t/uk-Moel-y-Parc file, I see:
T 738000000 8MHz 3/4 NONE QAM16 2k 1/32 NONE
T 770000000 8MHz 2/3 NONE QAM64 2k 1/32 NONE
T 794000000 8MHz 2/3 NONE QAM64 2k 1/32 NONE
T 818000000 8MHz 3/4 NONE QAM16 2k 1/32 NONE
T 546000000 8MHz 3/4 NONE QAM16 2k 1/32 NONE
T 578000000 8MHz 3/4 NONE QAM16 2k 1/32 NONE
I can't confirm most of the fields because I only use the frequency and bandwidth (8Mhz) specifically and "Auto" for everything else in tvheadend. BTW, once you've set up a mux manually like this, how do you find out all of its settings afterwards? The TV Adapters > choose tuner -> Multiplexes tab doesn't list all the mux config values on a particular mux line (it just says it's AUTO or AUTO-mode) and I can't seem to bring up a Properties-style dialogue box either :(
Anyway, as you can see, the frequencies for Moel-Y-Parc don't match at all - I had the same problem with "The Wrekin" (Midlands transmitter) when setting that up on another aerial. So is there somewhere I can pass the updated frequency info to? The two URLs quoted in the dvb-scans seem to be dead-ends:
http://www.dtg.org.uk/retailer/dtt_channels.html
http://www.ofcom.org.uk/static/reception_advice/index.asp.html
Those URLs may have worked years ago, but don't seem to have any useful info on them now, at least relating to the latest DVB-T frequencies etc.
I know you'll probably say "people can just type in the frequencies manually", but it's not as obvious as it sounds. People in the UK will try the "Add DVB Network by location..." first, find out that they get 0% on all their (wrong-frequency) muxes and think their tuners are faulty!
Only those "in the know" will go to Google and search for their UK transmitter's correct frequencies (and I bet some of those are hard to find!). You've also got to know that you scale the frequencies by 1000 compared to the Wikipedia example (Mhz vs. Khz), you use 8Mhz for bandwidth and then Auto for all the other fields - none of that is obvious unless you make some clever guesses.
It's quite sad that an entire heavily-populated country's DVB-T database in tvheadend is pretty well incorrect and has been for several years. I'd like to start to help fix this because it's actually quite a stumbling block during DVB-T setup, particularly for UK tvheadend newbies.
