Bug #1134
tunner or software problem
0%
Description
Hello everyone!
I have a big issue and i dont know how to solve this.
I use 3 TBS Quad tunners (TBS6984) with tvheadend and oscam.
For example i start tvheadend aplication and all works perfect.
After 1-2 hours some channels from my Channels list stop working and i receive this 401 error, something like this channels is not on my sistem.
If i restart tvheadend aplication all channels work back. I can put a cron job to restart tvheadend evey hour but this solution is not good for me.
Can help me someone?

Is this happening with both encrypted and unencrypted channels?
What client are you using?
And we really need a more complete log with debug enabled.

Hello Adam,
Any news about this issue? I can pay some money to fix this problem.
Thank you!
Updated by Adam Sutton about 12 years ago
At the moment, I can't see what's causing the problem. HTTP 401 error means unauthorized access.
This would suggest that VLC is not providing the authorization info on connection.
Can you just walk me through what you're doing? Is it something like:
1. start TVH
2. Open webUI
3. Select channel and play in VLC plugin?
What happens if you open a channel and leave it open for 2+ hours. Does it continue to work or does it stop?
If you close the channel and re-open presumably then it does stop? What if you re-fresh the UI and try again?
Can you try running TVH with authorization disabled, i.e. start tvheadend with -C option.

Hi Adam,
Let me explain you more.
I put all channels from tvheadend in our transcoder. I use links like: http://user:pass@IP:9981/stream/channelid/1
All is working without problems... After 1 hour all channels stop work and i recive this errors.
If i try to open http://user:pass@IP:9981/stream/channelid/1 in VLC is not working until i restart tvheadend...
I start tvheadend like this: /usr/bin/tvheadend -f -u hts -g video
I will try to run tvheadend with -C option to see if problem persist...
Updated by Alin Rotaru about 12 years ago
I try to start /usr/bin/tvheadend -f -u hts -g video -C but still ask for password when i try to open with VLC: http://user:pass@IP:9981/stream/channelid/1
Updated by Adam Sutton about 12 years ago
I think if you then try to connect with a user/pass it will fail. You need to connect without specifying either (anonymous).
Adam

Hi Adam,
I try without pass: http://IP:9981/stream/channelid/1 and is not working.
If i start with -C i can use http://user:pass@IP:9981/stream/channelid/1 but i can not access admin page http://IP:9981
To start application i use: /usr/bin/tvheadend -f -u hts -g video -C
Is not ok?
Updated by Adam Sutton about 12 years ago
I'm not sure if -f and -C work together, I can't remember off the top of my head.
I need time to look at this properly, but I'm busy with other stuff at the moment.

I try also without -f and also stream request password!
I use: /usr/bin/tvheadend -C -u hts -g video
Now after 5 minutes from start i recive this errors:
Aug 23 08:18:47 HTTP: 86.121.14.154: /stream/channelid/63 -- 401
Aug 23 08:18:53 HTTP: 86.121.14.154: /stream/channelid/63 -- 401
How i can solve this, because is urgent for me to work and tvheadend is the only software who know newcamd

This looks like your client is doing some very odd things. I get these sort of things when I disconnect my client (say close VLC).
I'm still not sure about the 401 errors, all I do know is that means that it's failed to gain access (i.e. the username/password are invalid).
The only thing I can think at this stage is to add some more detailed debug to try and see what might be happening. Can you run with the attached patch, that might give me some clues and at least point me in the right direction.
Note: the patch may not work against 3.0, you might want to get git master out (if you haven't already) and build that.

Updated by Adam Sutton about 12 years ago
OK,
I've just realised something, being a bit thick I think, the 401 errors are probably incidental. They are probably just your system trying to connect first without the username/password and then with it (depends how your system implements HTTP basic auth code). But that wouldn't surprise me.
That would explain why you get the 401 error immediately followed by the subscription messages, because you can't get a subscription if you don't have access (401).
So I think the 401's are simply a red-herring. But it would still be good to get the extra debug just to confirm that and in the meantime I will have a look to see if I can spot anything else.

Alin,
That's probably not a bad idea. I'm struggling to see what's going on here. There seem to be 401 errors which don't relate to any passing through the debug code I added, which makes non sense to me at all.
However it won't be today. I'm unlikely to be free this evening, and I think I'd better do another poke through the code to get some ideas.
If you want to talk about access to your server best do that off-board, ping me an email (its on my profile).

This all looks like performance problems to me. The timeout's are the UI handler code (that's streaming the data via HTTP) saying its not receiving data from the DVB system.
This could be a fault in TVH or could be a problem with the DVB firmware. One thing that does spring to mind is there have been intermittent reports of memory leaks when streaming via HTTP. However whenever we've tried to replicate we've not found anything, plus the codes been updated.
Maybe though you're more extensive setup (with what ~64 concurrent streams?) might be exposing the flaw in a more obvious fashion. Will have to try and chat about this when I have some time.
Updated by Alin Rotaru about 12 years ago
i take only about 35 channels from this 64 streams. so i have 35 concurrent streams.
maybe we can tunning something on tvh?
Updated by Adam Sutton about 12 years ago
I've had a quick look at your system and I don't think its a memory leak. Memory footprint seems small and steady (which is what it should be for simple HTTP streaming).
I also can't see any obvious causes for the failures in the system logs, i.e. no hardware faults etc..
It most probably is an inefficiency in the HTTP code, I'll try and take a look when I can. In the mean time you might want to look into installing some system monitoring tools on the server like sar (package sysstat), so we can check for possible changes in system load in correlation with faults etc..

I have the same problem. After some time, using the IP Video transcoding live, sometimes 12 hours or more in all streams completely flat with the same error.

After restarting service all is OK. Where is problem?
Updated by Adam Sutton about 12 years ago
The more I look into this problem the more I think its related to the cards, I think its highly suspicious you're both using the same card.
However its also odd that Alin only sees this when he gets above some critical threshold (i.e. number of adapters/services). So it could still be related to TVH. However in all the instances I've seen on his servers the cards/firmware have always gotten into weird states from which even stopping TVH and using completely different software does not appear to resolve the issues.

I will try to put next month one supermicro server with atom cpu 2 x 1.8 Ghz with 2-4 GB ram and one TBS quad to see if i recive same errors! I will try to take from tvh with this server about 30 channels simultaneously!

Alin,
That would help, I'm sorry I've not been able to get to the bottom of the problem. But it really does seem that every time we look at the issue all is working fine and then it mysteriously stops and the problems always appear to point at adapter problems.
I'm still not ruling out that TVH has a part to play in the problem, I'm just not sure what. One thing I did think we should try sometime, though needs a bit more effort. Is to run 1 TVH instance per adapter. But this would mean each TVH instance would be on a different port and you'd need to change your config accordingly.
This might help rule out some TVH cross adapter issues. If it works like this then I'd say it probably is TVH that's at fault, doing something that upsets the drivers. If this doesn't work its more likely the problem is purely in the drivers.

Alin,
How are you getting on with this? A lot has changed since the last time we talked including several significant performance improvements. Have you tried the latest version, or are you getting by with whatever setup you have?

Hi Adam,
Some servers work more ok with 3.1.605, and on other servers work more ok with new version. I dont know exacly why!
Updated by Adam Sutton almost 12 years ago
Can you please try latest git master code, or at the very least the latest stable release from the release PPA. We need to understand whether this is still an issue with the current code.

- Status changed from Need feedback to Rejected
Closing, lots of improvements have been made in 3.4. Whether this will fix these specific issues I cannot say. Personally my TBS6985 works fine and I know plenty of people running TBS6984's. But this could be a problem with scaling to very large rigs like yours.

Hi Adam,
I am also have TBS6985 card with the latest driver "http://www.tbsdtv.com/download/document/common/tbs-linux-drivers_v140425.zip" with a tvheadend compiled from the master and the latest changes are pulled as of today version "START: HTS Tvheadend version 3.9.569~ge113c3b-dirty started" and I am trying to stream 8 sd channels on 2 tuner slots (2 transpoders, 4 of each ) and I have also did some transcoding with it and it was working very good for about an hour and then it gives me lots of errors from that:
