tvheadend with several clients ( enigma2, android, xbmc )

Added by Dolphs Lundgren about 11 years ago

Hi, I am thinking of a tvheadend solution so I can stream DVB-C and DVB-S2 to my set top boxes, which are enigma2 based.
Apart from enigma2 I like to consider streaming to an Android device ( and in future integrate with xbmc ) but first things first ...

My idea is to set up tvheadend on linux Debian Wheezy having two ( or three ) DVB cards, so multituner is possible.
I need to be able to stream to three devices simultaneously ( two stbs and one android based client ) of which two steams can be HD at same time.
Further I will require vlc for transcoding, so I can stream to the Android device over WLAN ( and also over VPN )

My initial thought is to build the tvheadend server utilising with these DVB cards:
- TBS6680 DVB- C Dual Tuner Dual CI PCIe Card
- TBS6991 DVB-S2 Dual Tuner Dual CI PCIe Card ( or: 2x TBS8922 PCI DVB-S2 TV Tuner Card )

I assume the CI modules integrated on the PCI-E DVB cards can be made available using OSCam, so I can put my smartcards directly in these DVB cards.
Also the cards mentioned above need to run on some mainboard, a mainboard which has two PCI-e slots, or just one so I will need to insert 2 PCI cards instead: not sure here what to do yet ...

As I like to transcode now and then I am afraid an Atom would not be sufficient for this purpose.
I am referring to the Atom CPU as it should not consume too much Watts as it needs to be available 24/ 7

Least important thing at this stage is memory ( 4Gb at least ) and disk ( sdd ).

I wonder what the experts recommend, considering these prereqs.

Meanwhile sorted the hardware - However it seems there is no active/ little development on the enigma2 level to support tvheadend, so that will make things little difficult.

I am hoping e2 plugin RemoteChannelStreamConverter can dot the job supporting tvheadend streams.
All it asks for is IP-address, user/pass, ftp and (passive) telnet port

Can one confirm this (does not) work(s)? If not maybe DreamboxEDIT tool can be used adding channels via " IPTV and other streaming services " feature. That last option should work imho, just need examples...

Hi,

An Atom based system may be insufficient especially when you would like to do some transcoding. (Modern) i3 based processors are more expensive, but also quite energy efficient, and do not consume much more energy in idle state compared to an Atom based system. And most important of all, a LOT faster :)

I currently use an TBS6680 within tvheadend (among another card), but am experiencing some issues with it which I still have to figure out. Therefore I'm not sure if this card is the best choice at the moment. Offcourse the issues I'm having could be related to my local config and will work fine for others.

You cannot use the CI modules on the card within oscam. You will need a separate (USB) reader for that. It depends on the card which reader you will need. USB readers are quite inexpensive so that's not much of a problem.
