Using tvheadend and Mythtv at the same time, is it technically possible
Added by Bobby Kipper over 11 years ago
Dear fellow users,
Before I embark on another debugging / log checking journey that could take many hours, I would like to pose this simple yes/no question.
Right now I'm using XBMC as frontend, with both Tvheadend and Mythtv as backend for my DVB-S2 TBS 6928. Myth for the encrypted channels and Tvheadend for all the rest (much smoother experience). I'm running Gentoo Linux. I can only watch from one or the other backend. When Mythtv is started first, tvheadend gives me "diseqc setup failed -1". When I start tvheadend service first, all goes smooth with tvheadend, but I can't use mythtv. I don't want to watch from both programs simultaneously (as that's not possible with my card), but I want to switch channels from a tvheadend channel to a mythtv channel.
So if somebody could simply tell me either:
- Yes, it's possible it's done before, continue searching
or
- No, don't bother, technically impossible (perhaps because the tuner can only be used by one program?)
then I can go from there. Thanks.

bobby,
sadly it's the second one - the tuner would be "locked" by one application. by the one starting first. and... descambling channels with tvheadend (and oscam) works like a charm
a solution could be a script, that detects a channel switch, determines if the new channel is encrypted or not and then decides wether to start mythtv (and stop tvh first) or stick with tvh... well, at least in theory - i don't know if that can be (easily) archieved with some scripting...

hauke

I'd say, sure its technically possible, but sounds like a bad idea. A tuner
can only be used by one program at a time, so you'd need to ensure that
both Tvheadend and Myth are configured to properly close down all access to
the device when they're finished. They also need to handle problems with
opening devices temporarily (since the 2 apps aren't directly co-ordinating
there is bound to be some overlap between when one closes and the other
opens). Tvheadend will probably not like this.
I'd have to ask the question why are you doing this? Why not just use
Tvheadend, which is clearly a far suprerior product ;), for everything? Why
get myth involved at all?
Regards
Adam
