Some new user questions!
Added by Martin Griffiths over 11 years ago
I decided to give XBMC and TVHeadend a whirl last night after a promising email exchange with Adam about functionality. I've only ever used XBMC once before, I usually use Mediaportal.
Anyway, most things went ok. I used XBMCbuntu.
Some questions though.. I'm using a TBS6984 DVB-S2 card. I got the drivers installed ok (I'm also not very good with Linux!)
Am I right in thinking there are currently issues with multi tuner cards and TVHeadend? (I think it's 3.4 which was installed with XBMCbuntu)
Is there an easy way to map the channels to the 4 tuners without having to do a scan on each tuner?
Is there a page which explains the tuner adapter settings? I'm wondering what settings I should have for UK satellite. It did all work ok, and I got some EPG so it seems I'm at least partially on the right track!
Is there a way to get channels into genre groups like on a Sky box? Under Mediaportal, the plugin I was using did this.
If I install OSCAM (which I know how to do) then what do i need to use as a client? I'm used to using DVBAPI with Mediaportal.
I've not played with recordings etc yet, so will probably have more questions - it's a pretty steep learning curve!
Thanks for any assistance!

not that i know of, but scanning is actually pretty fast - about 5 to 10 minutes on Astra 19.2 for a single tuner. using w_scan for vdr meant a 20 minute coffee-break for me multiple tuners should do the initial scan all at the same time, as long, as they are idle.

it takes time until epg is fully poulated, if there are issues, take a look under "configuration > channel/epg > epg grabber", maybe you need to activate the OTA-Grabber(s). Either "EIT" or "Open TV: Sky UK" (or both).

AFAIK you can tag channels, but i don'k know, if XBMC would be aware of them.

take a look into "configuration > CSA" ... you can choose between a network-connection to oscam via newcamd-protocol (Codewordclient)or use the dvbapi via "Capmt Connections" ... its fairly easy, as long as you have oscam up and running. for newcamd you just need the hostname/ip of the box oscam is running on, the user-credentials defined in oscam.user and the (DES) key defined in the newcamd section of oscam.conf.

just a hint here - set the media container to "same as source" ... at least here the "Matroska" encoding does not work properly and some recordings are split up into multiple files... everything else works like a charm.

Thank you for the reply, very informative!
I stopped playing with it for a bit and went back to Mediaportal so the missus could watch her TV!
I had other issues with XBMC not related to TVHeadend which I couldn't figure out - major one being that no bitsreaming audio worked - just hiss.. And despite searching and reading I cannot find a solution.
I'm happy to revisit XBMC/TVHeadend and play again, but before I do, can someone clarify..
Are there issues with the latest version of TVHeadend and multiple tuners like my TBS6984? If so does it affect all the TBS cards with more than one tuner? i.e. 6981, 6984, 6985
I also cannot decide what distro to use - Openelec looked nice, but I don't want to be limited by distro, so am happy to use a full blown one like Wheezy or something.
Thanks!
