Recommend Hardware

Added by Adam Sutton about 12 years ago

I've created a wiki page DVBCards to make a note about known working cards, and peoples general thoughts etc...

So far it only include TBS6981 as that's what I use, but hopefuly we'll add stuff over time.

If you provide a post here about a card that you like/dislike reasons why etc... Any pointers on getting it working, that sort of thing. I'll try and move stuff over to the wiki.

Regards
Adam

Hi everybody,

Could someone recommend me a ISDB-T compatible hardware ?

In the home page, compatibility with ISDB-T (Brazil, Japan) is not mention but several people make it works. Is-it realy compatible ?

Thanks for your help

My friend, I post a question for develop team about ISDB-t, if you can support or help, please follow https://tvheadend.org/boards/5/topics/9323

Actually, this page perfectly answered my question: http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/ATSC_USB_Devices

Didn't know ATSC was a keyword for the digital OTA broadcasts in US/Canada.

RE: Recommend Hardware - Added by magic jcc about 11 years ago

I use two MSI Digi Vox ultimate Pro DVB-T USB-Sticks.
I had to upgrade the kernel to make them works, but after that they work like a charm on my seagate dockstar (kernel 3.9.5).

I even successfully tried the MSI Digi Vox Ultimate HD (withot PRO). Works with the right firmmware.

RE: Recommend Hardware - Added by magic jcc about 11 years ago

Hi.

The MSI Digi Vox ultimate HD is similar to the ITE 9135.
http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/ITE_IT9135

If you have a kernel > 3.2 you ionly need the firmware:
from 3.3
dvb-usb-it9135-01.fw
Kernel 3.2 uses
dvb-usb-it9137-01.fw

The MSI Digi Vox ultimate PRO has an Realtek RTL2832U-Chipset.
http://linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/RealTek_RTL2832U

You need a kernel > 3.7.
I used a precompiled kernel (3.9.5) for my seagate dockstar.

OTA=DVB-T, but do you really have HD-Quality in the USA/canada?

RE: Recommend Hardware - Added by Stan Grishin about 11 years ago

Well, since it's pretty much the only list of the tvheadend compatible hardware (and since I have just been burnt with the Hauppage 950Q), may I ask that the OP appends his post with the following information related to supported hardware in the big block letters:

It is not enough for the hardware to be listed as compatible/supported in the LinuxTV.org list, your card/usb stick has to support MPEG output which many do not!

They do indeed have HDTV OTA in North America, but there it is ATSC which means European DVB-T/T2 hardware won't work (and similarly ATSC hardware doesn't work in Europe).

Hardware known to work:

- Afatech AF9015T DVB-T stick. Requires a firmware file but other than that works flawlessly.

- Anysee E30C. Works out of the box, supports full mux reception.

- Terratec Cinergy C PCI (both "non-HD" and "HD"). Works flawlessly, supports full mux reception.

- Digital Devices Cine CT v6. Works absolutely flawlessly as long as the drivers are installed (which admittedly is kind of a pain in the ass).

- FireDTV C/CI. Works out of the box, though certain channels can't be played due to "too many open files". Also full mux reception is not supported.

- WinTV HVR-1100. Old ass DVB-T/analog/FM tuner that I haven't actually tested, though the /dev/dvb/adapterX node appears out of the box so I doubt there's anything wrong with it.

I will soon be getting one of those RTL2832U (IIRC) SDR sticks so I should be able to test if they work too.

Mine worked (can't remember if it was out the box or not) but after a while (days or weeks) it simply stops tuning to channels properly leading to failed recordings. Stopping TVHeadend, disconnecting, reconnecting, Starting TVHeadend gets it back but obviously not much use for PVR usages (and in my setup it was the 5th terrestrial tuner so rarely used (only for the East Midlands news on BBC ONE plus whatever housekeeping TVHeadend does) - the HD tuner took priority for BBC ONE but that had no local news).

RE: Recommend Hardware - Added by Sam Stenvall almost 11 years ago

@Kev S: I had the same issue with my Cinergy C PCI for quite some time, the issue resolved itself after I swapped the motherboard. I doubt that's the problem in your case though since this was a PCI tuner, not USB.

RE: Recommend Hardware - Added by Kev S almost 11 years ago

@Jalle Grönroos

I've a number of other tuners in my machine (MSI DigiVox DVB-T, KWorld Dual DVB-T, PCTV Nano 290e DVB-T2, and a Technotrend DVB-S) none of which experience the same problems. The only other tuner I saw the same problem with was a DM04 DVB-S satellite tuner (which did the same on my Windows laptop too).

DVBSky S952 dual DVB-S

Ubuntu Server 12.04.2 LTS with kernel 3.5.0-17-generic
tvheadend build: 3.4.27~gfbda802~quantal

driver installation as described here: http://www.dvbsky.net/download/doc/Linux_Driver_installation_en.pdf

Pros/Cons
+ linux support
+ fast channel switching (sd and hd)
+ PCIe low profile support
++ inexpensive (79 Euro) -> 40 € per tuner

- 2 free 4pin Molex connectors needed (for the power connector) But: Y-adapter SATA 15pin to 2x 4p/BU available (Amazon)
(-- driver conflict with former installed (properly working) dvbhdhomerun driver)*

If anybody has experiences with that kind of driver conflicts, please let me know. I want to make use of both devices simultaneously.

*EDIT: I've solved the problem by patching the kernel. See here my step-by-step guide: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=172610
Now both adapters are running like a charm, simultaneously.

Hi D. Photon, I bought DVBSky S952 (due your recommendation ;-) ), but i have some troubles with it - when I enable second tuner in tvheadend, stream from first tuner is stopped (HD in 5 second, SD more...). Is it same problem as your? There is no problem with driver config i think - no errors in log. With only one enabled tuner (first or second), is working everything fine.

Can your or anybody help me, please?

RE: Recommend Hardware - Added by D. Photon almost 11 years ago

Margi Margi,
I don't have any problems like that with the s952.
Is that just after enabling the second device in tvh or by using a second streaming client (xbmc, ...)?
Please give a bit more information...

RE: Recommend Hardware - Added by M. Margi almost 11 years ago

D. Photon,
thank for your answer. It begin immediately after I enabled second tuner. Tuner is without (with fully configured is the same, of course) configured LNB, is only enabled...and stream from first tuner is frezing.

RE: Recommend Hardware - Added by D. Photon almost 11 years ago

It sounds more like a hardware problem (shielding, ...?) Do you have the option to test the card in a windows environment?

RE: Recommend Hardware - Added by cab guy almost 11 years ago

I use a Sony Play TV USB tuner, can't remember how easy it was to set it up but it works very well and stable now.

RE: Recommend Hardware - Added by E D almost 11 years ago

This short post to confirm that a combination of DVBSky T982 Dual DVB-T2/T/C PCIe + DVBSKy S952 Dual DVB-S/S2 PCIe works great on Linux 12.04 Backend.

Driver & firmware installation procedure from DVBSky worked fine.

In comparison to my previous hardware (Reelbox including VDR in one box) the channel switching is a little slower (<2 sec vs 1 sec), but this is the consequence of the distant frontend.

I plan to order a second S952 to make use of the 4 available LBN outputs in the home network with additional frontends and/or multiple mux recordings.

A new happy member of this forum.

Hello all,

has someone already experienced Hauppauge WinTV Nova-HD-USB 2.0 ?

I am considering to buy this tunner, but I am in doubt about support(driver + firmware) and performance(usb 2.0)?

Does someone already had any experience with it?

Thank you all
Nuno

Quad if you only have one LNB. Otherwise you can use quattro and a multiswitch for one or several LNBs. Select appropriate switch...

I use a very cheap USB August DVB-T205 which is based on a Realtek RTL2832U. I works out of the box on Ubuntu 13.10, and I have seen all over the web how to install the drivers on older versions.

RE: Recommend Hardware - Added by Anonymous over 10 years ago

Is there any follow up to the TBS 6981 debacle?
I'm asuming the official TBS drivers are still buggy:

Looking for the best Dual DVB-S2 PCI card that I can buy (TVH+Openelec), should I still go for the TBS 6981 and get Louis' driver or which is in fact a better card nowadays (or down the road)?

Is the Digital Devices Cine dual S2 any better/faster than TBS 6981?

RE: Recommend Hardware - Added by E D over 10 years ago

Hello Pieter,
like I wrote some months ago, a combination of 1x DVBSky T982 Dual DVB-T2/T/C PCIe + 2x DVBSKy S952 Dual DVB-S/S2 PCIe works great on Ubuntu 12.04 Backend (currently 12.04.4 with kernel 3.11) .

Driver & firmware installation procedure from DVBSky worked fine and clients running 13.10 or W7 with XBMC frodo can watch tv simultaneously.

The only point I can't confirm is the stability when viewing encrypted channels: I only make use of FTA senders.

I'm successfully using a Sundtek MediaTV Digital Home III (DVB-C/T/T2) (german company with explicit linux support)

RE: Recommend Hardware - Added by Jos E over 10 years ago

Using at the moment a HD-HomeRun HDHR3-4DC with firmware 20140604

This works good if you install the dvbhdhomerun packages

git clone https://github.com/h0tw1r3/dvbhdhomerun 'dvbhdhomerun-0.0.16+nmu3'
cd 'dvbhdhomerun-0.0.16+nmu3
dpkg-buildpackage
cd ..
dpkg -i dvbhdhomerun-dkms_0.0.16+nmu3_all.deb dvbhdhomerun-utils_0.0.16+nmu3_*.deb

There is a fork available from pakar at https://github.com/pakar/tvheadend-hdhomerun which essentially is TvHeadend with native HD-HomeRun support
