Having great difficulty getting Linux to Install and see Win-tv DualHD
Added by Daniel Morgan over 2 years ago
Hi all, I'm really struggling to get my Ubuntu converted HP elite desk 800 g1 to install the relevent drivers and firmware for my usb tuner card. It supports Linux but all guides spiral out of control stating that one guide is outdated, leading to another guide that doesn't work etc. I've installed a supported Ubuntu OS according to the manufacturer website but all commands on their website and GitHub sites don't work.
I installed Tvheadend through snap instead of manually as that too wouldn't work.
I've uploaded photos to help show you what I have installed and will hopefully help you with how to solve this issue or provide a known working up to date guide.
Tuner is a Hauppauge Win-tv duelHD
On
Ubuntu 20.04. 5.30.019.30
If you need anything else please let me know

Why not start to read step by step

Thanks for that, however, this is that's the guide I followed with no luck. I think on one of my photos it shows the terminal script were it says "unable to locate package linux-firmware-hauppauge"
Also Tvheadend shows TV tuner as silicon labs si2168
Don't know if that's generic as I would have expected to see the words Hauppauge or Win-tv DualHD as the TV tuner? Giving me the conclusion that I don't think the drivers are installed, nor can Ubuntu see the device when plugged in

Personally I’d remove the Snap version and add this PPA provided by Michael Marley to apt install from the CLI. Should make your task a little simpler too

Thank you I will do. In regards to the drivers and firmware for my adaptor what should I do next? Thanks

Ok so got the driver to install. So Linux now sees my adapter. However for the life of me I cannot install Tvheadend onto Ubuntu 16.04
I've tried all builds, guides codes. Nothing works or no packages found.
Why is it so hard to install Tvheadend?

Why are you using such an ancient version of Ubuntu 16.04. Did you look at the PPA. The builds available only go back to 18.04. I strongly suggest you upgrade your Ubuntu version to at least 22.04. Support for Ubuntu 16.04 ended in 2021.

Is there a way I can update to just 18.04 so that I can keep my driver's for the tuner intack but be able to install Tvheadend?

So it looks like the highest Ubuntu that supports the card is 20.04.
All I can find is 20.04.6
Will this cause a problem with the drivers? Or would they still be recognised if already installed?
If that's so, then it looks like I can install the preferred Tvheadend builds.
Out of curiosity what's so bad about the snap version of Tvheadend?
Thanks (sorry my knowledge on Linux is very basic and it's really hard trying to figure out what mean what and what the terminology all means ha)

Why do you think that a later version won't support it? The dongle is a current product and Linux generally doesn't break things - once they're supported they stay supported. The last digit is just an upgrade counter; it doesn't matter.

Yes, you seem to be finding a lot of problems that don't exist. Remember that documentation can be out of date but the code usually keeps on working. I'd go for 22.04 (i.e. 22.04.2 at the moment) to get longer support as Jonas already suggested.

I'm reluctant to install the latest Ubuntu as I did that at the very beginning and the drivers and firmware from hauppauge wasn't supported. When reading their article online thats were I found their highest supported was version 21.10.
I might update to 21.10 and see if their is a Tvheadend build from Mamarley that supports 21.10. that was mus theory is:
Fairly recent OS with latest features and support
TV card firmware and drivers are supported and can be installed without compatibility issues
TV headend will install and have fairly recent features?

It’s not your inexperience with the Linux environment that is the problem here. You’re not following properly the well laid out instructions supplied here
https://github.com/b-rad-NDi/Ubuntu-media-tree-kernel-builder
As I suggested earlier, install Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and follow the link above. You need to find the EXACT firmware that matches your DVB hardware and drop that firmware file into the /lib/firmware folder.
You should find the the firmware file here under Making it Work, Firmware section. Download it. You may have to unpack the file. Copy the unpacked file into /lib/firmware. To verify it’s copied correctly just cd /lib/firmware and ls to see. https://linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Hauppauge_WinTV-dualHD
Remember I don’t own a WinTV Dual HD . I’m just outlining the process to you.

If you look at e.g. https://endoflife.date/ubuntu you can see that 21.10 is already out of support. So that is a very poor choice of release. Please follow Jonas' suggestions instead of trying to invent your own. He knows what works and he and others here will support you if you have any trouble when following his specific instructions.
I found their highest supported was version 21.10
Since that release is no longer supported, it's obvious that any article referring to it is out of date!

Thank you, so 22.04 is installed, ive followed the first link steps, that looked to go ok. I found my model and downloaded, tranferred it into the lib/firmware folder and ran the script to see if all is ok, here is the result, does it look ok? :

so more simple is to see with
dmesg | egrep "firmware|dvb|frontend"
	Don't post images from terminal
it's more simple to post text output.

It said frontend command not found
I just need to know to install the drivers part. The link only tells me about the driver, not what to do with it
Thanks

Ok, in very basic laymon terms please tell me how to install tvheadend as every instruction ive followed either errors when copying word for word or requires me to insert media:
Media change: please insert the disc labeled
 'Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS Jammy Jellyfish - Release amd64 (20230223)'
in the drive '/media/cdrom/' and press [Enter]
Amd also how to install the driver?
cant make heads or tails of anything on here
Im not personally having a go at anyone i appreciate all the help but its not as simple as "do this and do that" its like riddles and puzzles you need to figure out
With more time i will learn Linux but for now just need to get this project complete and up and running
Thanks again

There is no other easier way to explain this to you. Unlike Windows which I assume you are coming from you need a basic understanding of the file system in Linux.
This is the Hauppauge own method of installation which I assume they wrote for a beginner like yourself. https://www.hauppauge.com/pages/support/support_linux.html
According to these instructions drivers are already incorporated into the kernel after 4x. If you are using Ubuntu 22.04 you are using kernel 5x or greater. You should be able to skip the media tree step and just add the correct firmware file for your Win TV Duo that you downloaded into the /lib/firmware folder after you install Ubuntu 22.04.
So to summarise,
Install Ubuntu 22.04,
sudo apt update,
sudo apt upgrade -y
copy the Hauppauge firmware file you downloaded earlier into the /lib/firmware folder, reboot and your PC should recognise the USB DVB dongle.
Again I’ll stress I don’t own one of these dongles. It’s up to you to ensure you downloaded the correct firmware file to match the dongle you have.

That's great thank you. Your correct I have come from Windows but Linux is a different kettle of fish.
That explains the OS and firmware properly thank you.
But I'm still struggling to install Tvheadend. The links provided above when executing the sudo scripts I get so far though then an error occurs. For example "no packages found" or insert media then press enter.
I haven't deviated from the guides it just looks like all options to install Tvheadend are either outdated or don't work for some reason

Once you’ve completed the installation of Ubuntu and added the firmware file as I outlined you now need to add the TVH PPA. You do this as follows
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mamarley/tvheadend-git
sudo apt update
Now that you have added the PPA you need to install TVH
sudo apt install tvheadend

You need to post details (i.e. URL) of the particular guide you are following. It is also usual and very helpful if you post the entire sequence including the commands that you type and all the output they give. Then people can understand what you've done and where it goes wrong.

I wish that users coming from a Windows background would state that fact in their opening post. They are coming from an environment that discourages the use of the command line and actively hides the command line option from from the user.
Once I know that fact I switch into copy/paste mode when advising the user. It tends to keep things as simple as possible. Not ideal from a learning perspective but it gets the job done and keeps posts down to a minimum.
There are many instructions out there in the wild on the subject of Hauppauge hardware installation in Linux which are now outdated. It’s a case of the new user coming across the first Google search result and ploughing through it until they hit the wall.
To be honest this is not really the place for this post in as it’s not really a TVH issue but as we’ve all been there at some stage I thought I’d try help. Of course I’d prefer if the user came here first with a clean OS install instead of arriving after they’ve thrown the kitchen sink at it.
I’ll be curious to see if the OP comes back to tell us if the issue has now been resolved.
