Has anyone tried setting up TVHeadend with a USB tuner in WSL2?

Added by flex tcg about 2 years ago

I've been trying to do this for the past few days, but I can't get any further with it. I used USBIP to attach the tuner to WSL2, it shows up in lsusb and dmesg, but no matter what I tried, I couldn't get it to work with either TVH or w_scan. I'm absolutely dumb when it comes to linux, but to me it seems like V4L and DVB tools wouldn't load even if I add those modules and rebuild the kernel. It installs, the files and drivers are there, but the system just isn't using them for some reason.

I tested this USB over IP thing with Hyper-V and a full fledged Ubuntu, and it worked fine, so that shouldn't be a limitation, but I really don't want to use VM for this as it's a super sluggish process compared to WSL2.

I'm seeking for advice

Yes that unit appears to be problematic and was dealt with here before. Try reading this and maybe you could follow the advice given https://tvheadend.org/boards/4/topics/32993

For those who are not too familiar with Linux I’d tend to choose tuners that are known to work with TVH rather than purchase a tuner and hope to get it working in TVH, particularly USB tuners otherwise it can be very time consuming and frustrating.

I think there is a misunderstanding. I have no issues using it under a full fledged desktop Ubuntu. WSL2 is different however, it is super barebones.

I've bought this tuner back in 2016 to record some shows under Windows, and haven't used it much since. Not specifically for linux or TVH. Now I need it to stream cable channels to a room however with no coaxial cables in it.

Upon checking that link and the attached log on it, "dvb_usb_v2" wouldn't show up for me in dmesg even after rebuilding the kernel and turning that on. Is there any other way to make this dvb_usb_v2 thing to work?
