Question about full hd format and dvb-c

Added by Peter Kullmann over 3 years ago

I have a Hauppauge WinTV-soloHD connected to my cable provider. The only resolution I seem able to get is 720p. But the tv displays a much better picture 1080p. I don't know where to look for a fix.
Is it possible that the soloHD does not support more than 720p?

There is no limit.
Compare frequency on TV and TVH.

The information was wrong. My tv also displays only 720p. But it looks way better on the tv with its own tuner than through tvh and raspberry pi. The raspi can produce good images, eg via youtube.

when you say rpi, which player are you using, may consider something like kodi to auto resolution so the TV does the scaling ...

the TV internal scaler is still better then anything else, thats may the reason why your native TV picture is looking better, i guess your rpi is setted to 1080p and does the scaling ...

and with auto resolution you should get about the same as native

The client is the "Tvheadend HTSP Client". I tried to change the rpi resolution to 720p but it didn't look much different. I changed the hdmi cable and this made a big difference - but it's still not so good as on the tv.

may also take a look what codec the ts stream is you get, 720p should look pretty equal on any player in h264 ... with auto resolution (720p), auto refresh (50/60hz) on, even on a rpi ...

TV have special SOC processor with "touch" picture coming from tuner output.
This SOC upscale picture, fix interlacing, compensate motion artefacts and modificate colours.
Most "touched" picture have GNUSMAS (for me brand with most unreal aka worst picture)

And as you maybe or may not guess, HDMI input is bypassed from this SOC.
