TVH Guidance Needed
Added by Rob Longfield about 4 years ago
I hoping I can get some guidence on setting up TVH.
About a year ago I consolidated my home setup and moved to a single computer running ESXi with virtual servers. In the process I switched from MythTV to TVH.
The plan when I started was to get TVH up and running with my OTA antenna, then look at either, a) replacing my Satelitte subscription with an IPTV subscription or b) integrating my Satelittle sub with TVH and getting rid of my Satelitte DVR. So far I've failed on all tasks.
Now that my Home Assistant setup is solid, and with winter coming I thought it would be a good time to get back to TVH.
So I have some questions before I go chasing shadows.
1) Can I record shows from IPTV?
2) What kind of nightmare is connecting a Satelitte receiver to TVH? I seem to recall an issue with the tuner cards not allowing the HDMI signal to be recorded? I can't even remember what the protection is called.
3) I have a Pinnacle 800i? PCI card. The hardware is assigned to the TVH VM. I've read that this isn't a recommended setup for MythTV as there are timing issues. Does TVH have the same issue?
4) Is there a better tuner card/device I should look at. Maybe 4 tuners that won't break the bank? I don't want to have to fiddle with too much shit to get it to work.
5) Can I integrate my IP Cameras in TVH as channels?
6) Is there a dummies guide to setting up TVH? By the time I'm done resolving computer/user issues at work I have little energy to spend troubleshooting issues at home.
7) Any issues with using Kodi running on a RPi 3B+ as the frontend?
8) Can I compress and export TVH recordings easily? I'm looking at setting up a RPi Kodi box for my kids when we can do road trips again. I'd like to be able to copy their favs to an SD card and play them with Kodi in the van.
Thanks

Answering some of your questions - I don't do Sat stuff, so can't help there.

Yes, as long as you have a working EPG.
5) Can I integrate my IP Cameras in TVH as channels?
Maybe - TVH requires a transport stream, so it depends on being able to massage whatever your camera outputs into what TVH wants.
6) Is there a dummies guide to setting up TVH? By the time I'm done resolving computer/user issues at work I have little energy to spend troubleshooting issues at home.
Not so much. People have written some helpful stuff on the forums but the main caveats are 1) Everyone's setup is different [and different countries have different TV standards], 2) Tutorials can get out of date, so the TVH you're setting up may look different to what you're reading about.
7) Any issues with using Kodi running on a RPi 3B+ as the frontend?
Works fine.

That sort of thing is straightforward.

5) make a network named cameras, add an IPTV mux and use
pipe:///usr/bin/ffmpeg -loglevel fatal -i rtsp://root:[email protected]/axis-media/media.amp -vcodec copy -acodec copy -f mpegts -mpegts_service_type 0x01 pipe:1
this is an axis camera if yours is different you will have to find the rtsp link for it I send 5fps and it works fine
6) you won't be a dummy after screwing around a while
