For anyone else trying to do this - with the release of 3.2 you can simply open http://TVHEADENDSERVER:9981/playlist/channels - this will pick the first stream (4Music in my case)

If you view the playlist in VLC you can then channel hop easily.

If you try on the 2.x release than comes with Ubuntu it just crashes TVHeadend :(

Today I tried what you mentioned. In general it works, but most tv and radio stations are not working. I attached the error message that I get from VLC's error log.
I'm using Tvheadend 3.2.18.

Edit:
I'll also post the Log from Tvheadend. The initial channel subscription worked, but during a channel switch I got all this messages you can find in the file Tvheadend-Error-Messages.

Michael Neurohr,

Since the status screen was added in 3.4 I've noticed why this might have been a problem for you - VLC doesn't do what is needed to close the stream on channel change - if you wait 60 seconds it will start working.

Alternatively the new VLC HTSP Plugin seems to work much better as it correctly closes the streams - the documentation on Github baffled me at first so I've created a tutorial page here - https://tvheadend.org/boards/4/topics/8509
