No channels shown; no programs in EPG
Added by Jogchum Reitsma over 12 years ago
I installed tvheadend on a system with a Hauppauge PVR150 analog adapter. The software starts OK in the browser, the adapter is detected, but on the Channels tab no channels are shown.
The xmltv grabber is launched OK, sees some 1500 programs on the 10 channels configured in xmltv's config file, but they are not inserted in the EPG:
"Parsing completed. XML contained 10 channels, 1517 events, 0 new events injected in EPG"
What goes wrong here?
Thanks!
Jogchum

I know tvheadend doesn't do much automatically beyond scanning for muxes. You need to do much of the set up for the channel list and EPG yourself. I'm not on my tvheadend computer right now, so I'm doing this from memory, but here are some thing to try from the tvheadend web interface:
To get channels in the channel list:
1. In the configuration tab, select your tuner from the dropdown at the top-left.
2. Wait until you see the "Muxes left to scan" (or something to that effect - sorry, I don't remember the exact title) count down to zero (could take quite a long time -- go have a snack or a cup of coffee).
3. Click on the Services tab.
4. Place a check mark on the services that you want in your channel list. One of the columns also lets you give each channel a more descriptive name, if necessary.
5. Go back to the General tab.
6. Click the Save Services to Channels button (or something to that effect - again, sorry).
You should now have channels listed in the channels tab.
To get the EPG running:
1. In the channels tab, there should be a column next to the channel list that has to do with EPG. For each channel in the list, you need to select which EPG channel name from your XMLTV service is associated with it.
2. Go back to the XMLTV tab, make sure you have the right XMLTV scraper service selected and grabbing is enabled. Click save. Even if you've checked this and clicked save before, you might need to do it again to inject the newly-associated channel info into your EPG.
If all went as planned, you should be up and running.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for your reply!
I don't see any scanning for muxes activity, I'm afraid.
This is what I have done:
- choose the Configuration tab
- choose the "TV-adapters" tab (the fifth tab; first come from left to right "Channels", "XMLTV", "Channel Tags" and "Digital Video Recorder")
- on the "General" tab, select the Hauupauge from the drop-down box
- tick "Detailed logging"
- click Save
Now a small window "Information and Capabilities" appears, with some details about the adapter, the device path (/dev/video0), and the Status: Currently tuned to: Inactive.
No "Muxes left to scan" or anything that comes near that. The "System log" subwindow on the bottom only mentiones xmltv's grabbing activity.
So I'm not there yet... Any further hints?

Ok. Your channel and EPG setup aren't to blame. Looks like your tuner might not be accessed correctly. Your device path looks different than I would expect. I have a Hauppauge PVR-1950, which puts its tuner on /dev/dvb/adapter0, while it puts its external video input (RCA connector) on /dev/video0. I don't think there should be tuner capabilities on video0, but I could be wrong. Could you look into your /dev folder and see if there is something listed in /dvb?

Nope, looks like I'm wrong. It apparently can put the tuner on /dev/video0. I'll keep looking into it and see what I can find.

Do you have the correct firmware installed on your driver? Also, I read in one post that the HVR-150 is an analog tuner rather than a digital tuner (hence no dvb device).
Do you have analog channels in your area, or are they all digital? If they are all digital, you will need to get a digital tuner anyway.
In that same post, it was said the tvheadend has limited functionality when it comes to analog tuners, and requires that those tuners have internal MPEG encoding chipsets. I haven't found anything yet that confirms whether or not the HVR-150 does. I'll keep looking.

Hi,
No there is no /dev/dvb entry. Mythtv uses the tuner trough /dev/video0 OK, so I suppose the problem is not there, indeed. Isn't "dvb" short for DigitalVideoBroadcast? The Hauppauge is an analog device.
Group for /dev/video0 is video, and for the group it has rw rights, so that shouldn't be a problem too, I suppose.

Our posts cross, I see.
The Hauppauge is analog indeed, but has mpeg encoding on board. As I said, I can watch and record TV with mythtv usong this adapter. Also "cat /dev/video > test.mpg" gives a good mpeg file.

I got the EXACT same problem but with a PVR-500 device.
XMLTV adds 13 channels and 2171 events but no channels pops up
and the Multiplexes tab don't even exist here.
Hey, Jogchum Reitsma, did you get it to work?
and if so, what did you do?
