Astrometa DVB-T2 stick
Added by Rui Correia about 5 years ago
Hello,
I bought a couple of dvb-to-usb sticks from ebay and decided to try them with tvheadend.
Currently my setup is a PC running latest Manjaro Linux x86_64 with kernel 5.2.11-1 (running) and 4.19.69-1 (installed but not running).
Tvheadend was installed as a snapd module and it's version is 4.2.8 rev71.
One of the usb sticks works, poorly but it works. As I understand, it is one of the first usb sticks to support SDR-RTL, recognized by the system as a 'Realtek RTL2838UHIDIR'.
The other one that doesn't work is recognized as 'astrometadvbt2'.
Let me focus on the one that doesn't work from hereon.
Apparently the system can successfully start and initialize the usb stick.

While having tvheadend service stopped, I can run a channel search with w_scan and it actually finds muxes etc.

But after that, and after I start tvheadend service, I try to find muxes and it just can't find them.
If I add them by hand it doesn't work either.
One thing that puzzles me is that tvheadend says it just finds /dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0 whereas w_scan finds both /dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0 and also /dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend1.
Would it be possible that w_scan finds my muxes because it is using frontend1 instead of frontend0?
I know Astrometa are known to have issues but that's on older linux kernels. On Kernel > 5.0 they seem to have applied the patches that people talk about in other threads here.
Anyone that could please give me a hand understanding this issue?
Thanks in advance.
Cheers

OMG!!
This actually worked...!
https://tvheadend.org/boards/5/topics/22310?r=32055#message-32055
It's as simple as moving a couple of files at boot time and bang the usb stick is working for DVB-T and DVB-C with the Sony demodulator.
Is this a driver issue?
Is this a bug on TVH?
Why doesn't this work right out of the box?
Cheers

hi, how is your system working? meo ou nos? i want to buy one usb stick too .
RE: Astrometa DVB-T2 stick - Added by Rui Correia about 5 years ago
Hi Paulo.
I gather from your name that you are probably Portuguese but I'll keep the conversation in English to allow for more comments from the community.
At the time of my previous testings I had NOWO provider and both USB sticks sucked big time. NOWO uses DVB-C and their signal is usually weak.
But the issue way mostly with my setup. Somehow the Astrometa stick works fine on Windows but sucks on Linux. Some say it's the driver/firmware that on Linux doesn't enable the internal amplifier that comes with the stick whereas the Windows driver does that trick.
I'm not saying it worked perfect on Windows, but on Manjaro Linux it kept breaking and showing macroblocks and other artifacts.
But I was using Linux on an old PC whereas my intentions were to go with a small SBC such as a Pi3 or Pi4.
So I took my Pi3 and suddenly realized that the Linux that comes with the Pi sucks and that it doesn't come with Kernel > 5.0.
Correction, most Linux distros out there still don't come with Kernel > 5.0 and that completely ruined my plans because Kernel 5.0 is needed because otherwise the Astrometa stick doesn't initialize the tuner and it doesn't work.
I've put the project on hold since then. I am either picking it up again when Kernel 5.0 becomes a standard or I'll have to buy a DVB stick that is more expensive and has drivers on Kernel <= 4.x.
EDIT:
Oh, forgot to mention: NOS and NOWO both use DVB-C. MEO and Vodafone both use DVB-T. Some say that some NOS customers that have real FTTH (real Fiber) delivered to their apartment are already using DVB-T too, but these are very few Lisbon customers. I'd say that more than 90% of their customers are still on Cable, which means they still have DVB-C.
And this is very important because the Astrometa needs Kernel 5.0 to initialize the Sony demodulator, which I think is used for DVB-C and DVB-T2. But the Astrometa also has another tuner which seems to support DVB-T and which apparently works with Kernel 4.0
I still haven't tested it with Kernel 4.12 and DVB-T from MEO (switched from NOWO to MEO in the past couple of months).
I'll test and will let you know soon. If this works, I may resume this project sooner than later.
Hope these comments help you make your own decisions. And please share your thoughts if you find alternatives.
Cheers

Yes i am portuguese too .
it will help a lot, i have linux too but i am using sat>ip from my enigma2. I want to try some usb stick to get vodafone channels. i dont know if i will buy sat>ip server to use on tvheadend or pcie tv tuner. What you think it's best options?
RE: Astrometa DVB-T2 stick - Added by Rui Correia about 5 years ago
Oh..., sat>ip? I wouldn't have the slightest clue about it.
I am either going for TVH or nothing because I'm not very fond of specific appliance systems. A PC with a tuner card can make do for a watching TV but I can also use it for a ZoneAlarm (security, sensors cameras), NextCloud (for hosting my files, photos, contacts, mails) or anything else I could think of that can run as a docker container on it.
RE: Astrometa DVB-T2 stick - Added by Paulo Pais almost 5 years ago
hello again , sat>ip is to use with tvheadend, it pass satelite signal to network and tvheadend will detect as tv card. The price is almost the same as a good tvcard with multiple in port . normaly 4 ports is the ideal.
for example: [[https://www.fnac.pt/mp2059484/Telestar-DIGIBIT-R1-Transmissor-AV-Preto?&origin=google_pla_mkt_foto&gclid=Cj0KCQiAno_uBRC1ARIsAB496IU4k-4LM3TD3_55ONcZMEZgaTr_w2Lia_thoondPf7HLXNWqlKsg5MaAqN0EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds]]
I will by this or a good tvcard like [[https://www.ebay.com/itm/TBS6904-DVB-S2-Quad-HD-Tuner-PCIe-Card-Satellite-TV-Receiver-For-IPTV-Streaming/232038106255?epid=2215842273&hash=item36068c848f:g:PMQAAOSwIgNXovAP]]

Hi Paulo,
I am still trying to completely understand what you have on your mind.
You told me that you had Vodafone (which in my mind is either FTTH fiber or ADSL) but you are also talking about a Satellite receiver which IIRC Vodafone doesn't support.
Please bear in mind that the reception devices (sat receivers, usb tuners, PCI tuners) all support different digital television standards.
- On FTTH (aka fiber), supported by MEO and Vodafone, the standard used by the provider will be DVB-T. A device supporting DVB-T/T2 will be advisable since PT will move to the T2 standard in less than 5 years. At least that was the idea but they seem to be holding it back. Also NOS seems to use DVB-T in places where they are handing over the service using FTTH instead of Cable. Not sure. You'd better ask them if you'd go with them.
- On Cable, supported by NOS and NOWO, the standard used by the provider will be DVB-C. There are some devices that support both DVB-T/T2 and DVB-C but some don't .
- On Satellite, so far the only providers I know for PT channels are MEO and NOS, and they either use DVB-S or DVB-S2. Please note that there might be devices that support both DVB-T/T2/C/S/S2 but I don't know any.
So, if you want to go the TVH route, you need to know which provider you will be using and which standard for digTV they provide to your door and then buy the appropriate device/tuner to install on your PC.
RE: Astrometa DVB-T2 stick - Added by Paulo Pais almost 5 years ago
hi,
I know that, i have vodafone(fibre) and Nos(satelite). And iam thinking in a mix solution
RE: Astrometa DVB-T2 stick - Added by Rui Correia almost 5 years ago
Oh! You have 2 providers. In the same home? Interesting setup you have there...
In that case you definitely need to go with a DVB-T/T2 tuner for Vodafone and a DVB-S/S2 tuner for NOS.
And now we have been diverging for a very long time...
Ok to stay on topic, I will see if I can try the Astrometa DVB-T2 stick on LibreELEC using the "media_build" drivers on kernel 4.19 ARM.
"Linux RPi3 4.19.36 #1 SMP Sat May 4 17:23:44 CEST 2019 armv7l GNU/Linux"
So far, from what I could see early this morning, the Astrometa was properly found by TVH 4.2.7-44 with:
- Sony CXD2837ER DVB-T/T2/C demodulator #1 : DVB-C #1
- Sony CXD2837ER DVB-T/T2/C demodulator #1 : DVB-T #1
- Realtek RTL2832 (DVB-T) #1 : DVB-T #0
That's two entries for the Sony (DVB-C and DVB-T) and one entry for the Realtek.
Hopefully it will work as expected. Can't wait to record some tv shows with it.
I'll let you know in the next few days.
Cheers
RE: Astrometa DVB-T2 stick - Added by Rui Correia almost 5 years ago
Ok, my setup is flawed.
There's something very wrong with the way the Astrometa stick is working.
I can make it work but with a signal strength of 129.8dBm and an SNR of 20.4dB.
From what I read all over the Internet, anything above 80dBM is bad, and above 90dBm is a miracle that it can still tune the channels.
With almost 130dBm I am still able to tune the channels on occasions and when it works the picture quality is terribly bad.
Usually it would either be broken tuner (hw) or a driver/firmware issue. Since the stick works properly on Windows, it is definitely a driver/firmware issue.
Anyone knows how to solve or workaround this issue with the Astrometa stick?
Do I have to look for alternatives? What are my options? Pinnacle sticks?
Thanks in advance.
Cheers
RE: Astrometa DVB-T2 stick - Added by Paulo Pais almost 5 years ago
I dont know what is the best option. But i think its some card 100% compatible with Linux and tvheadend. You can see here:
https://linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Hardware_Device_Information
I already decided my next setup, vu+ duo 4k fbc dvb-s2x + dvb-c .. 8 frequency simultaneously from satelite and dvb-c :).
RE: Astrometa DVB-T2 stick - Added by Rui Correia almost 5 years ago
Ok, now I'm puzzled...
These 'devices' are both on the same Astrometa USB stick.
- Sony CXD2837ER DVB-T/T2/C demodulator #1 : DVB-T #1
- Realtek RTL2832 (DVB-T) #1 : DVB-T #0
I disabled the Sony demodulator and left the Realtek RTL2832 enabled and now the signal strength has risen from 130dBm to 70dBm and the SNR is now staying around 40dB.
But yet the video image is full of artifacts and small hiccups.
Anyone out there that have found a fix for this?
Thanks
RE: Astrometa DVB-T2 stick - Added by Gonçalo Nunes almost 5 years ago
I have the same usb stick, want use dvb-c (NOS), on tvheadend only have DVB-T tuner on adapter 5, I don't understand what I need to do on patch file at this solution https://tvheadend.org/boards/5/topics/22310?r=32055#message-32055
Can I talk with you Rui Correia in Portuguese?
Thanks
RE: Astrometa DVB-T2 stick - Added by Rui Correia almost 5 years ago
Hi Gonçalo.
Welcome aboard.
I see you have the Astrometa DVB-T2 stick too and you have doubts/questions.
I will write in both English and Portuguese and hope I don't break any forum rules.
It all boils down to the Linux Kernel version you have running on your device. If your device runs on 4 and lower, you need to patch it. If it's running 5, then it should already have latest patches. At least, that's my understanding.
Unfortunately, I don't know how to apply the patches. I gather that you would need to probably recompile the kernel to include them? I honest don't know, but it sure looks like something I wouldn't like to be doing once on a regular computer. Then I thought the computer is not regular, it's an under-powered raspberry pi 3. And then I thought that on every new kernel patch I would have to recompile. On an ARM chip...
Sorry mate, wish I could be of assistance but I guess I'm not.

@Rui Correia, I have install a Astrometa DVB-T2 stick on a Ubuntu 20.04 with TvHeadEnd.
I noticed that the key worked perfectly locally with Kaffeine, no artifacts.
But with TvHeadEnd I have some artifacts.
I modified an option in TvHeadEnd :
Configuration=>DVB Inputs=>Sony CXD2837ER DVB-T/T2/C demodulator #0 : DVB-T #1
check the box "Force old status"
(Always use the old ioctls to read the linuxdvb status (signal strength, SNR, error counters). Some drivers are not mature enough to provide the correct values using the new v5 linuxdvb API.)
=> now I have no artifacts with TvHeadEnd.
Always use frontend 1 (Sony CXD2837ER) for DVB-T and DVB-T2, frontend 0 (Realtek RTL2832) don't work
