Getting chinese Geniatech USB DVB-S sat tuners to work
Added by Dan Iallo over 5 years ago
Ok, have been using Argus TV on Windows for years, decided to give TVHeadend a try.
I've only briefly dabbled with Linux...
Hardware Lenovo Tiny PC running Ubuntu Server 18.04.2 LTS & TVH 4.2.8-22~g67e75a932, running headless
Hauppauge WinTV Dual HD USB DVB-T2
2 x USB Geniatech DVB-S2 tuners - https://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Geniatech_HD_Star_DVB-S2_USB2.0
Ubuntu installed OK & I'm connected via Putty/SSH
TVHeadend installed no problem, but only saw 1 of the 2 Hauppauge Tuners, no sign of the DVB-S2 tuners.
I copied some terminal commands from the Hauppauge site & got the 2nd tuner working after a reboot. All good watching TV on Kodi.
As for the other tuners I'm going round in circles trying to get TVH to see them.
lsusb sees them & the Hauppauge:
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 8087:8000 Intel Corp.
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 8087:8008 Intel Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 004: ID 2040:0265 Hauppauge
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 1f4d:3000 G-Tek Electronics Group
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 1f4d:3000 G-Tek Electronics Group
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
I downloaded a firmware & dropped it in /lib/firmware & confrmed it is there with my limited skills, this is from the dir listing
dvb-fe-ds3000.fw ositech
But still no joy.
I've done all manner of searches, it seems these boxes are supported, but when I read some of the results the answers are very "Linux Techie".
I'm OK with doing terminal commands etc & following idiot steps, so hope someone can help as this looks a great bit of software & works very slickly on the tuners I do have working.
Cheers

Have you red this
https://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Geniatech_HD_Star_DVB-S2_USB2.0
dmesg |egrep "dvb|frontend|firmware"
RE: Getting chinese Geniatech USB DVB-S sat tuners to work - Added by Dan Iallo over 5 years ago
Yes, read it many times, but it doesn't tell a non-savvy user like me what I should do to ghet it working.
I ran the command - dmesg |egrep "dvb|frontend|firmware"
It shows the boxes:
[ 0.029546] Spectre V2 : Enabling Restricted Speculation for firmware calls
[ 13.292972] dvb-usb: found a 'SU3000HD DVB-S USB2.0' in warm state.
[ 13.293091] dvb-usb: will pass the complete MPEG2 transport stream to the sof tware demuxer.

[ 13.969171] dvb-usb: no frontend was attached by 'SU3000HD DVB-S USB2.0'
[ 14.028306] dvb-usb: schedule remote query interval to 150 msecs.
[ 14.028309] dvb-usb: SU3000HD DVB-S USB2.0 successfully initialized and conne cted.
[ 14.028340] dvb-usb: found a 'SU3000HD DVB-S USB2.0' in warm state.
[ 14.028433] dvb-usb: will pass the complete MPEG2 transport stream to the sof tware demuxer.
[ 14.028503] dvbdev: DVB: registering new adapter (SU3000HD DVB-S USB2.0)
[ 14.032484] dvb-usb: MAC address: 00:af:78:66:2e:94
[ 14.364508] dvb-usb: no frontend was attached by 'SU3000HD DVB-S USB2.0'
[ 14.364949] dvb-usb: schedule remote query interval to 150 msecs.
But TVH still doesn't see them, I'm guessing "no frontend was attached by 'SU3000HD DVB-S USB2.0'" means something?

It clearly mean that no tuner found.
Do you do any manipulations with media tree kernel modules?

Appreciate your help but "Whoosh" straight over my head there. I'm a novice.
I'm getting into this slowly, but I'm from a windows background
They've had plug & play for over 25 years. Linux would be so much more popular if they had it.
It's a test box so maybe I'll try another distro.

Installed Librelec & activated TVH as an addon in Kodi. All working out of the box now.

Hi, is your system still working well? and is this the model you have? https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B078X9P33R/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I have tried this tuner, but my system doesn't recognize it.. same symptoms as you describe, dmesg reports the hardware.

From memory it worked OK, but I went back to Argus TV combined with Mediaportal on Windows. TVHeadend just didn't do all I needed.
I use an Nvidia Shield to watch TV that hooks up to the Argus server no problems.
