TVheadend for 100 devices
Added by iw is over 5 years ago
What hardware can be used as server with Tvheadend that allows to connect 100 client devices simultaneously to it? Of course, the device should have 1Gbps Ethernet. Currently I have this hardware https://myserver.opentechnologies.pl/en/technical-documentation/ with Raspberry Pi , but Raspberry Pi has only 100Mbps Ethernet.

Invest in some real hardware not to developer boards.
Also what input sources will be used?

Source as described on https://myserver.opentechnologies.pl/en/technical-documentation/ i.e. 3 or 4 Media-tech MT4171 DVB-T tuners, or should I use different tuners? In any case, I would like to receive 4 DVB-T multiplexes.

Put it on Jaguar One Plus to have some transcoding
4 multiplexes x35 megabit each ... you need two of this toys switch an pc with gigabit lan.
then need to calculate bitrate on most used channels will not be bigger then top usage
Sometime multicast is better solution with smart-switch but only on lan networks
ex. hotel networks, isp providers and university campuses.

Thanks for the response. If I understand correctly, transcoding is not needed because I have a symmetric connection to the Internet with 1Gbps upload and 1Gbps download.

Depend on streams calculations.
ex.
If have fullhd@15Mbps channels, and 100 clients mathematically and physically its impossible.
100*15=1500 Mbps
But if compress 15 -> 5-8 it is possible.

In Poland we have 3 Full HD channels with bandwidth up to 6 Mbps and about 26 SD channels with lower bandwidth. If everybody is watching HD channel, then 100 x 6 Mbps = 600 Mbps < 1Gbps.
