better stream config than pass?

Added by orundi jones almost 6 years ago

HTS Tvheadend 4.2.8-4~g9f7ab681a~bionic
OS: Mint 19 tara
Kernel: x86_64 Linux 4.15.0-44-generic
tuners:
LG Electronics LGDT3306A VSB/QAM Frontend #0 : ATSC-T #0
HDHomeRun ATSC-T Tuner #0 (192.168.1.xxx)
HDHomeRun ATSC-T Tuner #1 (192.168.1.xxx)

when recording ATSC HD stations i am getting massive ts files. tonight was a 180 minute game that was 17525 MB. CBS primetime and sports is the worst. is there a better stream setting or a way to shrink the sizes to stop the digitization and make it so my kodi clients can play the files? right now i have the default set to pass with MPEG-TS Pass-thru.

any thoughts or ideas would be awesome.

Transcoding after record or live transcoding.

Kodi should be able to play the files without any problems.

Easiest/cheapest solution is to use a big disk. If we assume 1000GB=~1TB and your file is roughly 6GB/hour then a cheap 2TB disk stores roughly 300 hours. Many channels have lower bitrates so will use less disk space, so maybe you would get 500 hours or more (approx. 20 days of continuous watching). Throw an 8TB disk at the problem and you'd get 2000 hours (roughly three months worth of tv).

Personally, I prefer the "WD RE4" disks ($54 for 2tb), but even a cheap usb disk is fine for the workload.

i think that's what i'm asking. is there a way to "live" transcode that will not diminish the performance of the backend, and will produce a smaller sized file that has the same quality as the .ts files

There is no 1:1 quality transcoding, but with with supported nvidia video card
https://developer.nvidia.com/video-encode-decode-gpu-support-matrix
you can reduce stream bitrate to 1:4 or even 1:8
