Tuners not showing in setup
Added by Paul Goodwin almost 6 years ago
I have Ubuntu desktop 18.10 installed with TBS6280 tuner card (dual DVB-T2 tuner card).
Installing the drivers was a bit of a pain but finally working. They work fine with Mythtv as the backend but I really wanted to use TVHeadend.
So, I uninstalled Mythtv and installed TVHeadend (v 4.2.6 from Ubunutu Software, nothing clever from me).
Everything seemed to work fine and I can see the setup screen (from web broser) but I cannot see any tuners in the
"Configuration -> DVB Inputs -> TV Adapters" screen.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Ubuntu software centre, so via the snap store? Unfortunately its supplied by a third party and not by anyone I know of involved with Tvheadend. Hopefully they'll see this here and reply.
Missing tuners usually means..
- incorrect permissions
- kernel/driver problems.
I personally would remove the version from the store and install it from mamarleys PPA (apt.tvheadend.org has no stable builds for cosmic atm) instructions to do that are here https://tvheadend.org/projects/tvheadend/wiki/AptRepositories#Ubuntu-PPA
Remember to remove the snap version first!

Before reinstalling, or indeed changing, anything, I would try to find out what is wrong.
Paul, how familiar are you with linux? Since mythtv worked, your drivers presumably work. (You haven't updated the kernel since?) So the first thing to do is check what Tvheadend is logging. There are some options, but on my (openSUSE) system it logs to /var/log/messages, so something like:
# grep tvheadend /var/log/messages | less
should show you all the logging it has produced. The first messages should show any problems at startup. Post here if you need help interpreting.

The snap more than likely doesn't have permission to access the dvb device, or another process has exclusive lock.
I recommended using the PPA because the snap is an old version, and is dependant on whoever made the snap for updates, it also has no source that I can find.

Hi,
Thanks all for your help so far, this has helped me to isolate the problem (and rectify it).
What I did was uninstall the snap store version and reinstall from mamarleys PPA.
I then had to give access to the user (sudo adduser hts video).
All seems to be working now (and the EPG is working too :-) ).
Only remaining issue is that no HD channels are showing. I don't know where to start with this so would appreciate help (again!)
Thanks all

Only remaining issue is that no HD channels are showing.
What transmitter do you use, and what multiplexes does it transmit on what frequencies? (there are utilities like w-scan and dvbv5-scan that can get up to date lists - shut down TVH first)
What does TVH think you have? Look at Configuration/DVB Inputs/Muxes
Compare the two sets and study the status in the TVH screen to begin diagnosing what's wrong.

The issue was that in the initial setup, the T2 muxes were not added, I've manually added these now and all is working well.
Even the picons are working!
Excellent.
I'm a happy boy (easily pleased)!
Thanks all for your help any happy new year
