doubt about tv box

Added by mike her about 7 years ago

I want to buy this tv box KI PLUS S2 T2 Amlogic S905 Quad core 64-bit Support DVB-T2 DVB-S2 1G/8G, as it has dvb-s2, my doubt is this card will be compatible with tvheadend?

the idea is to install ubuntu or debian and install tvheadend to connect tv satelite.

Features of the box are:
1, Amlogic S905 Quad-core 64-bit ARM® Cortex™-A53 up to 2GHz
2, DDR3 1GB RAM , eMMC Flash 8G
3, Android 5.1.1 Lollipop OS
4, UHD 4K 60fps HW decoding
5, Support Multiple formats including H.265 10-bit, H.264 and AVS+;
6, Support 2.4GHz Wifi, Gigabit LAN, Bluttooth 4.0
7, KODI Pre-installed and play perfect
8, DVB-T2+S2
9.CCCam, newcamd, biss supported

Any card that is supported by Linux (and has drivers) should work with Tvheadend - broadcasting standard (DVB/ATSC etc) permitting.

the idea is to install ubuntu or debian and install tvheadend to connect tv satelite.

6, Support 2.4GHz Wifi, Gigabit LAN, Bluttooth 4.0
7, KODI Pre-installed and play perfect
8, DVB-T2+S2
9.CCCam, newcamd, biss supported

These boxes usually use a combined tuner (most likely the avalink) - these are known to be troublesome if you plan to watch more than one service on the same mux at a time.

hi what box recommend or brand, or device that has economical dvb-s2 to connect satellite with tvheaded? thanks.

The other thing to remember with these types of boxes is that often the Linux that you can get running on it is a very old version so has less dvb support than newer versions on other architectures such as Pi.

There's no right or wrong answer, it's subjective & down to personal taste. Most multi-frontend tuner boxes use the cheapest chipset they can get hold of, which generally means they're limited, usually in the form of hardware pid filtering (limiting the no. of streams a tuner can send at a time).

Agreed. I've read people trying to run it on all sorts of hardware from Pi zero, to their NAS, to large machines that must cost several thousand.

Unfortunately it depends on how you use the Tvheadend. Some people may just schedule one programme now and again, others want to record every programme broadcast.

For S2, people often recommend the Digibit R1 for the tuner. This connects via Ethernet so eliminates many of the driver issues.

The S905 boxes can run unofficial versions of LibreElec that has a tvheadend plugin. I've tried it out and it works, but I don't use it. Some people run Pi, but I frequently see problems posted, but then we only ever hear about problems not successes.

If you have an old laptop, that can be an easy way to test it out since you don't need a fully working screen or fully working keyboard.

You also need some hardware to use to watch the recordings. I use an amlogic box and it works well.

Greetings friend

believes that with the amlogic box I can connect 1 satellite, install armbian which is a debian for these boxes, install the tvheadend and be able to share the satellite signal to other devices? Thank you.

RE: doubt about tv box - Added by Em Smith about 7 years ago

I don't know if it will work. If it does then let us all know since many will be interested. Unfortunately these boxes rarely give you full hardware details so you can't be 100% certain.

To me, it seems Armbian for S905 is based on the 3.14 kernel (current Intel version is 4.13+). As Mark said, the tuners in some of these boxes can have problems.

But, if it works then tvheadend allows you to share the signal via sat>ip configuration. Or you can use a box running Kodi to talk to the tvheadend.

Some of these systems don't support graphics if you install another OS (such as Armbian). But if Armbian correctly works the graphics then you can run Kodi on the same box as tvheadend.

I would probably try LibreElec first instead of Armbian since it looks to me to be easier to setup.

A lot of these "debian" systems are really very cut-down versions of proper debian and don't have the same variety of packages to install, so I don't know what packages Armbian has available for S905.

I'd recommend staying away from Amlogic boards. Their VPU for hardware encoding/decoding is poorly supported, and only on 3.14 kernels. While the board can now run mainline (4.14), full support is still not there. I ran Tvheadend 4.2.4, and development 4.3, on an S905 board (Odroid C2), but experienced random lockups and reboots that forced me to abandon using it for my tv server.

Also, because the official kernel version is so old, drivers are going to remain an issue. Amlogic currently has some 4.9 buildroot images available, but they're missing some libraries. In short, these boards are only really suited for running Android, and are best avoided for anything other than development purposes.

hello robert what device I recommend for this purpose, but do not have a high cost thanks.

Your needs and mine are likely different. I can't easily recommend something without knowing many details, and I have no experience with DVB tuners. As mentioned, stay away from Amlogic and choose a chipset that is properly and fully supported by the mainline kernel.
