Triax TSS400 MkII Sat>IP Server - Any thoughts on this?

Added by Chris Beasley about 7 years ago

Hi

I've got the cash together to move to Sat>IP which will fit better with my virtualised server systems. I'd love to get a Digital DEvices Octopus NET quad S2 unit but after shipping and import fees it costs well over $700 NZ Dollars.

The Triax TSS400 MKII can be delivered for $300 including fees which is far more palatable but I am concerned about performance... Does any one have any views on the Triax unit? Specifically, tuner performance, stream setup times with TVH, list of satellites, support and firmware updates plus any niggles and problems. I've read reasonable reviews on Amazon for this but value any users comments.

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris,

Mark Clarkstone and I did alot of "work" on this unit.
It took some time to set it up and the manual is the worst!
But now that I have been using it and got the hold on the setup, its a really nice unit.
Im currently only using 2 of the tuners, but it works great.
Performance: I haven't had any problems.

$300 seems like alot, think i got mine for $180.

What is your current setup like?

Im working on a tutorial for the tss400 mkii and tvheadend (my setup), so ask away.

Kind regards
Pablo

Thank you for the reply Mister!

Are you able to tell me whether Optus D1 @ 160E is on the Satellite list as that is the satellite I would need access to. I'm happy with 'hard' work, I just want to know that it will work fine once done which it sounds like it does. DOes the latest firmware allow for single, double, quad tuner use?

The $300 is converted to New Zealand dollars from UK pounds, I did see one for $271NZD but that might be an one of price from Ebay...

I'll think about any further questions in the meantime!

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris,

Well, the TSS400 does not "see" anything.
It only converts the signal from coax to ip. So you just have to put in the right frequencies into the tss400.
The setup for the satellite is still done in tvheadend or what ever you want to use.
So if your satellite is pointing at Optus D1 @ 160E, then that should work.

dont think it supports more than 1 lnb.

Kind regards
Pablo

Ah ok, so it simply requires the correct LNB setting and that is it?

Thanks,

Chris

Yes, its "only" a converter.
It does have a build in "dlna" server, but I have not used this.

Kind regards
Pablo

I'm resurrecting this!

I've been using this successfully for quite some time now, but I've hit an interesting issue that hasn't actually bothered me before... Everytime I reboot TVH (or any other tv server), upon loading they are unable to find the tuners. I have to then reboot the triax, reboot the TVH server and then finally they come back.

This happens on baremetal, virtual, synology package...

For reference, if anyone needs to know, the Triax TSS400 MKII potentially uses a non-standard desc.xml to advertise the tuners, this causes trouble with most linux based TV servers as they can lose the tuners on a reboot. For TVH you need to pass the following arg in /etc/default:

--satip_xml "http://IP of TRiax:80/rootDescr"

this will then cause tvh to bind itself without needing to discover the server everytime. This will require a static IP for the Triax unit however.

Hello, in case of a multiswitch (Diseqc) installation, should there be one cable connected in each RF input?
Or could it work even with only one cable (a multiswitch exit) connected?
I can't understand if with a diseqc/multiswitch it is mandatory to connect all 4 inputs.
Thanks

Just for the record:

I needed to edit /etc/default/tvheadend
In my case the last line of the file is for startup arguments. Mine now says:
TVH_ARGS=" --satip_xml http://192.168.0.46/rootDescr"

@g siviero: If you only connect one cable, you can only use one tuner.

I’ve just got one of these, but I suspect that the firmware is really old - although recognised by TVH, the channel reception is rather spotty. Sometimes it works - sometimes not.

Is there some firmware released that I could upload - can’t find any on the internet and the manufacturer hasn’t replied.

Can’t comment on any of the above brands but I managed to get a Digibit Twin for €80 delivered. Twin IP>Sat DVBS tuner. Perfect stream which is automatically detected by TVH once it is on the same LAN. A lot simpler than worrying about broken drivers on every kernel upgrade.

Actually, he now replied and supplied the firmware. I put it on a download site if anyone else needs it.

And the firmware for the TSS 400 mark 1

Hi Nigel, realise this is from a while back but could you share the firmware again please?

Thank you! Could you share MK1 too? Is there a website with these anywhere publicly? Sorry to bother you.

No, I only have mk11. I got it from triax themselves, maybe worth a try - though they did say it was discontinued for quite some time.
