SatIP performance & virtualisation of TVheadend with SATIP tuners

Added by Chris Beasley over 7 years ago

Hello

I've almost given up on my TBS cards due to their inability to do anything in linux at the moment and general poor performance and have been looking at the Digital Devices octopus range of SATIP units with 4 DVB/s2 tuners.

I'm used to the traditional card in the machine with the channel times etc. that come from that. I've also tried to unsuccessfully virtualise the server in my esxi cluster but the tuners sharing the same IRQ always mess up but this is in both windows and Linux.

I have two questions, as per the subject:

1) What is the general performance of SAT/IP as a network source compared to locally attached? I'm used to channel change times of 1.5s (ish) and I wonder whether the network position will affect anything? I'm fully wired with 1GBe so sub 1ms latency is observed across the network. Does sat/ip use in TVH act similar to locally attached?

2) Has anyone got a virtualised TVH Setup that uses SAT/IP? I presume as the tuners are not located in the machine, its simply the horsepower and memory assigned that will affect the performance? My virtualised Xpenology server has no issues with streaming movies or games via the lan so I presume HTST and HTTP access will not have issues?

If anyone has any thoughts on this, that would be fab.

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris,
1) I use a DVB-Max S8, with 3 of it's tuners allocated to SAT->IP. It's usable like lokal cards, no mentionable difference in reaction times or whatsoever.
2) I had the TVH-Server virtualized at some time. Fact is, the service itself does not need much CPU power. IF you only passthrough the stream or do use HTSP-streaming to Kodi etc. It needs much CPU-power or GPU-support when transcoding every stream. So: It should run fine ;)

Thanks Daniel, really appreciate your reply.

How did you handle recorded shows when virtualised? Did you have a dedicated drive for it, or simply a datastore?

Its looking quite handy for SAT>IP then!
