How to use timeshift feature in VLC?
Added by Matej Munih over 7 years ago
Hello!,
I build a Ubuntu 16.04 system with a TBS 5927 sat tuner and Tvheadend 4.2.2. I works perfectly with VLC but I am not able to use the main feature I was looking for in tvheadend: the timeshift, both rewind, pause and fast forward features.
Reading the documentation, I discovered that timeshift feature is only available with HTSP streams and not with the HTTP stream that I am currently using with VLC.
My question is: is there a way to use the HTSP protocol with VLC and having the timeshift feature working reliably? I want to use VLC because it is so fast and reliable. I don't want to use Kodi (I tried and timeshift didn't work at all + CPU usage was very very high compared to VLC)
Thank you

Not possible VLC plug-in use some of features of HTSP protocol.

If thee is some HLS supported solution for timeshift will work.

Hi,
Thank you for your reply.
I understand... sadly, the most reliable and well known open source player is not supported.. this is absurd
Could you please tell me which HLS player for mac I can try?
Moreover, how do I have to configure tvheadend in order to use HTSP/HLS protocol?
Thanks

Kodi have support

It seems that Kodi should have support... I tried the tvheadend pvr client and I must say that it is one of the worst application I've ever tried... tons of bugs and not working stuff.. plus CPU at 100% after a click on Kodi icon.....
I mean.....it can really be possible that tvheadend developers have not developed a client or a plugin for the VLC player? really?? and how do they test the timeshift functionality then???
I really cannot understand why people from Eyetv have been able to create a very simple and reliable timeshift functionality and no one else is able to......sad

100% on Kodi = OpenGL or VA support missing.
Utilization of timeshift from external plug-ins/apps,
is problem of developer of plug-ins/apps.

I checked and my macbook 2009 has OpenGL support as you can see from the screenshots.
Do tvheadend developer team and VLC developer team have a plan to cooperate together in order to make available all the tvheadends features on VLC player? I think it should be a very useful cooperation. Both are very stable and reliable apps.
