A little lost

Hi Everyone,
Sorry if this seems like a silly questions but after hours on google I just can't seem to find the answer.
I currently have DirectTV but my understand is that there is no way to get your subscribed channels to work with TVHeadend apart from free to air channels?
I live in the San Diego South area of Cox Cable which I believe means you can get unexpected channels with TVHeadnend and a tuner card. Where I am confused is that we don't receive a box with a card as the packages are set at Cox themselves. So does that mean if I switched to Cox and as long as I had the relevant package purchased a tuner card with TVHeadend would be able to pick up all the channels I am subscribed to and not just free to air ones that are clear?
Any help appreciated.
Regards,
Mark

You will NOT be able to use a tuner and Tvheadend to watch the encrytped channels and MAY not even be able to receive all the un-encrypted channels. You will have to search a little to find out which channels are available WITHOUT using a box provided by Cox. While they are required by law to provide any locally broadcasted channels normally received in the area , it may not be so easy to use them.
