Recordings way too short for program
Added by Rich Lund over 7 years ago
Hi there. I have 4.1-2405 installed on Ubuntu and accessing IPTV streams. All seems to work well with a Pi running LibreElec as client but I'm having some issues with recordings - basically quite a few have ended way too soon. As an example, I had it scheduled to record a soccer game yesterday and although the EPG data and recording description say the program is 3 hours, TVH only captured a 50 minute (successful) recording.
I'm a bit puzzled as nothing seems to be wrong (plenty of disk space, no errors, healthy newly-built machine) and TVH does not appear to detect a problem. I've tried a few more recordings and seen the problem sometimes but not every time. The most obvious indicator of an issue is the file size - these are HD streams and I'm guessing an hour should be the best part of 1gb but for the ones that are wrong there is an obvious mismatch between the file size and the "Scheduled Duration" shown in the TVH recordings list.
I'm basically at default settings but have tried tweaking and changing back a few things. Yesterday I changed the recording "Stream profile" from the default "pass" to "matroska" and that seemed to make the problem worse - I see a recording in TVH with a "Scheduled Duration" of "2 hrs" and the file is 33MB. FYI I grab an XMLTV stream every hour for the EPG data.
Any recommendations appreciated - I find it odd that TVH doesn't seem to see a problem as something fundamental seems to be wrong. I'd appreciate help turning on logging if that will help - the logging options aren't totally clear to me.
Thanks in advance!

One thought that just occurred to me - could it be the ad skipping? I've noticed it doesn't cut out ads (maybe because this is IPTV?) and I also noticed that the problem seems to be channel-dependent in terms of which recordings have issues. Could the ad skipping be aggressively cutting out a portion of the recording after the point it thinks it finds an ad? That might explain it. Going to try turning it off...

OK, I may have figured this out. With my IPTV provider I only have access to one stream at a time. It seems like the behaviour of TVH when anything grabs a second stream while a recording is running is to keep the first recording going but stop outputting to the file and begin outputting to the second stream/file. I can see how this makes sense but it doesn't fail the recording or indicate any issue which isn't what I'd expect - maybe a feature to add? I've now changed my network maximum input streams to 1 - I had set it higher as this seemed to speed up the initial channel scan. I think this will stop TVH from being able to initiate a second recording when it can't get a stream and so the existing stream will keep going?
Solved myself I think but thought this might be useful if anyone else runs into this sometime.

Hi Rich,
I know it's over a year down the line but did you get this to work?
I've tried with two IPTV providers, and a stream from an Enigma2 box, set them all to a network max. of 1 stream only, and I'm still getting 2hr programmes cutting themselves in half with no errors (and nothing in the debugging logs). If I had any hair, I'd be tearing it out...
Cheers,
Dean
