Unload or remove an adapter

I have an issue where one of the adapters (rtl) I wish to use for other things rather than in tvheadend but it is automatically loaded upon inserting the device. How can I stop tvheadend loading this device so I can use it with other software? Currently it remains unusable and other software reports kernel driver is active.....

Ok it turns out it was loading dvb_usb_rtl28xxu onto the device I wanted to use for SDR. What I am stuck with now is the option to only load dvb_usb_rtl28xxu on certain devices. Using the parameter adapter_nr=0 in modprobe loads all of them. Any ideas?
