Can you use TVHeadend to build your own SAT>IP Server?

Hi,

I am considering whether or not to buy a SAT>IP device at the moment.

I was just wondering whether I could build one myself using TVH. Is this possible or does the software not work that way?

Tvheadend 4.1 can act as a SAT>IP server. I can't remember if 4.0 can though!

Excellent - it might just be what I am looking for as the pre-made SAT>IP servers that I am looking at don't seem to exist in the configuration I am after (I want one with 2x DVB-T tuners and 4x DVB-S2 tuners) - at least not at any reasonable price.

Would it have all the same functionality as something bought off the shelf?

I should think so. You may want to start off small though to make sure it does what you want, get something cheap, like an rpi & a bog standard tuner, install 4.1 & have a play :).

Thanks you - that is a really good idea.

I am going to grab a cheap TV tuner off E-Bay and see if I can get things working on a spare PC.

One other quick thing that I have to bear in mind is the cost of building my own vs buying this:

It can become expensive!

It would definitely work out cheaper using a HDHR & a SAT->IP server. Just make sure you have a gigabit network!

Luckily - I do have a decent gigabit switch.

Just out of interest how do Network tuners work in the grand scheme of things?

Say I have my Server, backing up to my NAS. At the same time, I am streaming multiple HD streams to my Server for recording.

Is there any chance that the tuners might start dropping the signal, due to saturation of the network?

Yes. But you can use traffic management to overcome it.
