help with mapping services

Added by Peter Carlson about 8 years ago

I am just moving over to tvheadend and kodi after being a longtime user of mediaportal. I'm having an usual problem.

Setup:
hdhomerun tuners, OTA ATSC, tvh v 4.1-2236, ubuntu 16.04

I went to networks and added a new network using mux us-ATSC-center-frequencies-8VSB and had it scan. It found some 113 services. For the super strong signals it had no problem with those channels. For some of my weaker channels, it keeps switching channel numbers each time I tune. so for example it found channel 31.(1-5) on 4 different muxs. When I tune one of those channels, it switches the Local Channel major and minor to 47.X but it will do it for all of the channels that were marked 31 even those that are actually channel 31

I dont know if I am describing what I am seeing very well or not.

Unfortunately, you're not - at least I'm not really understanding what you are seeing. But I will mention that there is a phenomenon called "tropospheric ducting" (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropospheric_propagation#Tropospheric_ducting) that for a short time can cause far away stations to come in as if they were local. In the old analog days this would have been obvious, you'd tune what you think is a weak but receivable station in your area and instead get a station from a few states away. It happens mostly on VHF channels but one time I saw it bring in UHF channel 50 from 200 miles away, clear as if the transmitter were next door. If you have to try to do a scan on a day when tropospheric ducting is occurring, you are going to see a lot of strange things and get a lot of channels you wouldn't normally get. 113 services is a LOT for terrestrial TV, unless maybe you are right in between a couple of major metropolitan areas, and that is what makes me think you might have been experiencing tropospheric ducting. I'd clear everything and try scanning again on a different day.

I'd also suggest taking a look at the service names. You could be in an area where a station is in the process of moving it's frequencies or you could be picking up a translator for the station. There is an option up Tvh that if the service names are the same, you can select to merge them for mapping so it will only deal with one of the frequencies.

If these are two different sets of stations - I would suggest turning off the weak stations if you don't need them.
