Coming from Mythtv
Added by Josu Lazkano over 8 years ago
Hello,
I am new here. I am using Mythtv for years. I read good opinions about tvheadend and I want to try it.
I really like Kodi for music/photo/video server.
Mythtv is really good for livetv and recordings, I like it. So my mayor doughts are about it.
Anyone comming from Mythtv could explain your experience?
What client software do you recommend? Kodi? Openelec?
I will really appreciate your help. I want to migrate 2 backends and 5 frontends from Mythtv.
Best regards.

Hi,
AFAIK tvheadend can not create backends that communicate and schedule recordings together as intelligently as MythTV.
MythTV has it's annoyances, like the load (in design choices etc.) that stem from the fact that it started as an analog video source recorder - DVB handling is not done as smoothly as it could be done (and would require a rewrite). Also it is mandatory to make configuration trough a GUI or to learn how to use mysql (but one might arque that tvheadend is not better in this regard, since there is no way - or at least no documented way - how to configure from command line - but it is certainly more sane to configure a backend trough a HTTP than the clunky menu interface of MythTV - and a headless backend is a lot easier with tvheadend!).
Before making the shift, try out tvheadend somewhere to form your own opinion. With 2 backends and 5 frontends I have a suspicion MythTV might actually better suit your needs. TVHeadend is better for a single backend solution (but this is just my opinion / guess). YMMV ... so try before buy switch

Thanks!
I installed tvheadend and add 2 frontends. It works great, LiveTV is OK, he recordings is not as MythTV but I will try it.
Best regards.

I had used mythtv for several years, before switching to tvheadend + Kodi. Boy, tvheadend is sooooooooo much easier to configure! Recorded files are stored with meaningful filenames; you can actually work on them on nautilus and else.
Not to mention that mythtv still does support SAT>IP (look here for SAT-IP: https://forum.mythtv.org/viewforum.php?f=3)

Thanks!
One question.
Will tvheadend save all livetv for some days? I use it in mythtv and it is great.
Regards.

Under Recording --> Digital Recorder Profiles you find profiles where you can set the retention time to "forever" or a number of other, shorter options. I use that and delete manually, or recode the file to compress it for longer storage.
