DS214play transcoding support
Added by Muhammad Fadhli over 8 years ago
Hi,
I'm using HTS Tvheadend 4.1-2088~g321fcc1~jessie however I'm having issues transcoding 1080p HD streams to lower resolution, it works but just pause abit and play. I'm guessing it's transcoding using the CPU instead of the GPU. How can i force to to transcode using the GPU?
Thanks.

You most likely cannot. Synology has adapted ffmpeg to utilize hardware decoding on their evansport devices such as your DS214play and my DS415play. They have kept the adaptations closed for a pretty long time. When they disclosed them nobody cared to adapt their ffmpeg forks anymore. There is one guy in the Synocommunity who has indicated a potential willingness to port the adaptations into a new ffmpeg 3.0.x spk package. However, then you still need to compile TVH dynamically against that package. If J. Dierkse bothers, we would be very, very lucky. If not, you would have to do it yourself, because by default, ffmpeg is compiled statically into TVH. So, lots of ifs and whens for a platform that is already pretty outdated. Wouldn't count on it...

hi martin,
thanks for your replies. guess i have to upgrade this unit. any hardware you would recommend for 1080p h264 on the fly transcoding?

LOL I asked that question to myself a couple of times. Definitely regretted buying the play model as the play part was essentially useless for me. If Synology again, I'd go for something which is docker compatible (some recent + model). With that you get lots and lots of additional possibilities, but since I have never tried to realize 1080p h264 on the fly transcoding with such a setup, I cannot really recommend this to you either. My next NAS will most likely be self-built and run Ubuntu server to avoid these kind of problems in the future, but again, not enough knowledge / experience to give you some specific recommendations hardware-wise. For the time being, I simply don't transcode, which actually works pretty well for me, too. I have hard-wired Intel NUCs and RPi2s and some wireless tablets as clients. Only bottleneck are the tablets due to their WiFi connections, but that still allows streaming SD channels, so I have configured TVH and tags in a way that I can acccess either all channels or SD channels only, depending on the device.
Not very helpful I suppose. But I'm sure there a people on these forums (or on #hts) who can give you better recommendations on transcoding...

Are there any news on this topic? I'd be very interested in hardware transcoding support for my DS214.
Many thanks in advance,
